Best primer for post blasting?

Hey guys,
Just had some parts blasted by my local Dustless blasting company, and the car is due to be done next weekend. He is dry blasting everything.
What is recommended to use on parts that are blasted just to seal the surfaces while I’m doing the metal work on the car. I bought some epoxy primer after reading a little, but now I’m having 2nd thoughts.

Thanks in advance!

Self etching epoxy primer and you can use body filler right over top of it.

So is epoxy primer and self etching epoxy primer the same ? I purchased Ppg JP375 epoxy primer. It doesn’t say “etching”.
Want to make sure I start the right way!

Self etch and epoxy are not the same. You either use one or the other. Epoxy is the top choice because you can apply filler directly over it if you are with in the recommended top coat time. Most people have got away from self etch and use epoxy as a ground coat these days.

DP50LF / DP402LF Catalyst Grey

Or DP74LF / DP402LF Catalyst Red Oxide

Or DP90LF / DP402LF Catalyst Semi Flat Black

This is all you need.

Rick bacon from muscle car and kevin tetz from trucks from the powerblock both recommended this. I bought a gallon of this for my 70. I read a lot of reviews and this stuff is highly praised .

thanks

A follow up question on the recommended top coat time. The car is being blasted and it will be quite a while before I’m ready to apply filler, so if I’m out of that “top coat time” window, what’s the best thing to use, or is there a work around, or switch to the stuff droptopcat70 linked me to?
I sure as heck don’t want to apply this epoxy primer and then have to sand it all off when I start that body work.

Thanks again!

Basically block sand and re - shoot.

From the PPG Data sheet for DP74LF (all the others are identical):
"After 1 week, it must be cleaned, sanded and recleaned.
· Reapply 1 additional coat of DPLF Epoxy Primer.
· Allow 30 minutes dry time with DP402LF @ 70°F (21°C)
· Allow 60 minutes dry time with DP401LF @ 70°F (21°C) before applying additional
primer surfacers and/or topcoats.
"

That’s correct epoxy is good for extended storage. Then you can scuff it up and do your metal work reapply and do your filler work as you have time.

I always used self etching Vari Prime (DuPont) until it got stupid expensive. Then I switch to epoxy primer and actually like it better and have had no issues with epoxy primer. Lot of different brands on the market. https://www.semproducts.com/product/metalocktm-dtm-high-build-primer/primerI I use SEM Metallock and thin it down for my first coat so it doesn’t act like a build primer. You can use it as a build primer also, but it doesn’t sand as easy as a regular high build primer. Epoxy is the way better option for long storage time between body work and paint. Etching prime will not protect it from flash rust long term. It’s basically a go between the metal and build prime to give it adhesion to each other.

Thank You guys!
