So my 68 XR7 interior is mostly (I think) original. It has the 6D, red leather interior, red console, red dash pad and red door panels. But here’s the thing … It has a black carpet. The carpet looks original to me, appropriately worn, in all the right places, for a car with just 79k miles. I can find no evidence in the impressive records held by the PO of a carpet replacement. The black carpet does provide an attractive contrast, so if it is a replacement, I hereby honor the choice of one of the two POs!
But my question is – does anyone else have black carpets in a 6D car??
I have also seen such a car that belonged to a friend of mine. His car was all original as well. For what it’s worth, his car’s exterior was black with a black vinyl top.
I think the black carpet would make a great contrast. There is a black 67 on eBay now with red interior and it has red carpet. It looks good as well. Here is the link.
Carpet would have been red originally. If it was original you would see a carpet faded to gold or orange anywhere the sun hits. Replacement carpet has always been available.
I was able to reach the PO who had the car for 25 years. He said the carpets were black when he got the car but were fading in spots to a orange/red hue. He dyed them the consistent black I now enjoy. While he suggested that the orange/red hue might have been the aging of black carpets, his opinion is that his PO likely dyed them from red to black, supporting Royce’s and others views.
I think I will pull off the sills, peek under the console and see if I can spot any evidence of red deep in the pile.
If so, I might start my Christmas list at WCCC early this year…
