Blitz, camera questions

The WCCC photo contest got me thinking of getting a new camera. Not sure what to get.
Thought, who better to ask than a pro.

Currently have a Kodak point and shoot M580.
Takes pretty good pics.
But I want something better, with a telephoto lens.
What would be some good choices, say under $500.00

Thanks

My self I like Nikon products an have several cameras(2 D7100 and a F-2). I did a search in Amazon and found several Canon kits that were in your price range. They are a good product. I also found this Nikon D3100 kit.

I know Andrew has Nikon cameras and will post later. Good luck.

There are a lot of good options in your price range. You should also consider these factors:

  • Are you willing to mess with separate lenses, or would you prefer it to be an all-purpose built-in lens?
  • How big of a camera are you willing to carry around? Should it fit in your pocket, or does that matter?

Because at $500, you can either get a nice point-and-shoot, a mirrorless camera, or an entry-level DSLR. You mentioned wanting a telephoto lens, so keep in mind that “optical zoom” is what matters, and that “digital zoom” is a gimmick that compromises image quality.

My main fancy camera is a Sony A77. My compact secret weapon is a Sony RX100 (I took it to Europe and got the shots of Cougars in France that were published in the 2015 Calendar, as well as an article in LCM). So I like Sony, but Nikon and Canon are great too. I find Nikons more user friendly than Canon though, but that’s an opinion. The WCCC “work” camera is an older Nikon D5000 and it works fine for product shots with flash, but it’s a bit dated now.

There are so many options, I don’t know if I can recommend any one in particular. Here’s everything on B&H under $500, sorted by most positive reviews: link

I have two Nikon cameras. The one I really love is the P610 (the other is the P900…larger camera). The P610 has a massive 60x (1440mm) Optical zoom and you don’t have to mess with changing lenses. It has limitations, but takes amazing pictures.

Thanks for the info.
With the Black Friday sales, time to go shopping.

You can also get good used cameras from eBay or other sources. I have a Nikon D300 I purchased from an eBay seller for a reasonable price, which included regular and a wide-angle zoom lens.

I purchased a D700 from a friend last year. For less than the cost of a new camera body, I got the camera, spare batteries/charger and a really nice lens.

Both cameras function perfectly.
