Wanting to do the Borgeson P/S conversion kit on my 1968 Cougar with P/S. I’m also going to replace all of my suspension and steering parts with oem style parts as well. Just wondering if I should use a manual steering draglink and idler arm instead of Borgeson’s draglink adapter? Also, does anyone know if you use your oem pitman arm with it?
If you use the manual drag-link you have to use the manual pitman arm also, if you use Borgeson adapter, then you can use your OEM arm.
Thanks Catlover!
After looking at the steering components more closely, it appears that the pittman arm and draglink are parts that typically don’t wear out. So if I’m thinking correctly, I might as well just order the Borgeson draglink adapter.

catlover,
Looks like that one doesn’t fit Cougars. Did you mean 990003?
Does anyone know about how far I need to collapse my steering column because of the Borgeson gearbox? I have already installed the gearbox and getting ready to mount the column.
If you use the rag joint that comes with the kit, you may have to cut some off the inner shaft if it wont slide up far enough.
I think it is supposed to fit without cutting on the 68 with the collapsible steering shaft. I did the conversion on my 67 and had to cut off about an inch I believe. I used the Borgeson adapter on the drag link which worked pretty slick.
Thanks guys. I’m wondering if I need to mount the column and remove the gearbox to collapse the column or can I collapse it out of the car?
You don’t collapse the column, you just push the inner shaft up into the column further.
There are plastic pins that tie the inner and outer shafts you’ll have to overcome to be able to slide the shaft deeper into column. That should be easy to do with the column outside the car. https://www.vintage-mustang.com/threads/steering-column-issue-1968-mustang.806122/#post-6173698
Thanks guys! I’ll give it a shot. I also ordered the lower the lower bearing assembly from Mustang Steve. It should really help to take the slop out of it.
Hey guys, I got the mustang steve lower bearing and I am assuming that I need to cut the inner column tube flush to the outer tube. Is that correct and are there any other things that I need to be aware of?
I have not installed one of those, but you might ask Steve I am sure he knows.
Will do. Wish they had some instructions. Very few you tube videos out there too.
