Hey Guys
MY power steering ram is leaking and making a huge mess under my
nice 70 Cougar convert …I’m considering a Borgeson unit …I love keeping things stock
But I feel this would be a cleaner option as the car sits for 7-8 months
LMK if you have done this or if you think it’s not worth it or nay issues you have had with it
Cheers for the feedback
A friend of mine does this to all his cars. He has a lot of trouble with the reproduction Chinese made pump reservoirs leaking. Not something I would do but your car is your car.
Anybody had trouble with an original ram leaking after a rebuild? I’m getting ready to tackle mine with the rebuild kit:
Ram Cylinder - Rebuild Kit - PREMIUM - Repro ~ 1967 - 1970 Mercury Cougar / 1967 - 1970 Ford Mustang ( 1967 Mercury Cougar, 1968 Mercury Cougar, 1969 Mercury Cougar, 1970 Mercury Cougar, 1967 Ford Mustang, 1968 Ford Mustang, 1969 Ford Mustang, 1970 Ford Mustang ) at West Coast Classic Cougar :: The Definitive 1967 - 1973 Mercury Cougar Parts Source
I made the swap on my 69 351W and my opinion is mixed. Steering is tight and the ratio is a tad tighter, so road feel is great. The look is clean, but it takes some getting used to when you open the hood and see a Saginaw pump instead of the coffee can. It runs hot since the hydraulics run through the gearbox, and it is very close to my stock cast iron exhaust manifold. I had to add a PS cooler and use premium fluid or the pump screamed on even a mildly warm day.
If you drive it a lot or like to get aggressive, I think it is a fun upgrade over stock. If I had it to do over again, I would probably rebuild my existing parts and buy the best hoses I could find.
Thanks, Royce, it’s just frustrating, that with the little amount driven, it will probably leak again in the next 5-10 …eventually I won’t have to worry about it LOL…Thanks for the feedback
Thanks for the info, things I would have never considered…got me leaning towards a rebuild.
appreciate it
Likely you have hoses leaking because the typical parts store hoses do not fit right. These do: https://bluedotspecialties.com/
Awesome Thanks Reece …you are an excellent source of great info Thanks for the help
I converted my 69 convertible.
Borgeson recommended I stay with the original reservoir as it wasn’t leaking, continuing with Type F fluid.
The one thing i have found is the power steering doesn’t engage until the car starts to move.
I would do it again.
Mike does that mean the engine has to rev up a bit?
Thanks for the feedback Mike…I appreciate it
No just start rolling.
