Anyone install one of these kits on a ‘67 (non-tilt)? I’m mid-install and the instructions are… not the best. They say to screw the kit’s lower steering column mount to the firewall using 3 existing holes and screws. The problem is the stock column mount uses 4 holes/screws and is much more robust than the kit’s simple plate mount. I called Borgeson and was told to mount their plate under the stock mount by drilling 3 new holes. I don’t see why this is necessary as the stock mount should do the job, and I don’t think it’ll fit there. Did you leave their mount out?
Happen to have any pictures? Might be easier to see what your challenge is and help with a solution
Sure! Here’s the steering box side of the stock column and mount (yes, I still need to clean and paint it).
Step 3 of the instructions say to install the column mount from the kit to the firewall/floor with the 2 tabs bent inward (there’s really only one tab on the mount). A standard hose clamp is provided to secure the column to the mount by clamping around the tab.
As you can see, the hole pattern is completely different (the two top holes don’t even line up) and the stock mount won’t fit on top of the kit’s mount with the tab bent inward and the clamp in place. I can’t image that the kit’s mount would secure the column better than the stock mount and I’m inclined to leave it out. Seeking opinions from people who have dealt with this before and wondering if there’s something I’m not considering (like maybe the column angle ends up being slightly different). Thanks.
Use your stock mount. It works much better.
That’s what I’ll do… just as soon as it’s not so damn cold out. Column is already trimmed (exactly 0.5”) and repainted in charcoal black metallic. I’ll provide lessons learned when I’m done.
