Boss 302 head question

The PO of my car (owner #4) states that the 3rd owner installed new Boss 302 heads during a 1979 rebuild.
I noted the other day that the valve covers have the good old 6 bolt pattern. Wouldn’t Boss 302 heads have the 8 bolt pattern?
Could it be that the my heads are just from a standard 302? Haven’t had the covers off to look for “numbers”.

Yes, eight bolt pattern for the Boss 302.

That’s what I figured. What would be the benefit of 302 heads on a 289?
I only own, drive and maintain my cars. I’m not big on the technical details of motor components!

That looks sweat!

No benefit that I can think of with the stock heads. The 1969/70 351w stock head had the best flow and can be bolted onto a 302. Otherwise, the most benefit would be from an aftermarket alum head.

I luv ragging on my chevy friend with his LS6 454 Chevelle. When he starts bragging I just say my 302 cu Boss motor has bigger ports and valves then your 454cu big block Chevy…

Don’t get me wrong, I am not a chevy fan by any means but, he has 454 CI to suck through those ports, and we only have 302 which is a torque killer!

The Boss 302 was a race engine design for the T/A series to kick butt on road courses. High rev’s is where it makes power and yes, not much on low end torque. But, with todays technology with the proper cam grind and a pair of Intake/exhaust plates. You can get alot of that low end torque back.

The operative words have been highlighted.
