Brake light switch

You list the SW-864 twice. I just want to make sure that it is correct and not a typo. Thank you.

The listing is correct. I wanted to keep the listing by year and brake type simple.

Okay, thanks. I just wanted to be sure.

NPD sells the SW-862 for SW-864 services. I just figured out I’ve got the wrong spare.

Generally if the part is electrical and from Scott Drake or NPD you are assured of poor quality and failure. The old original stuff from the 1970’s or earlier is worth the extra cost because it fixes the problem.

I’m getting pretty sick of having to kick my brake pedal after every stop, just to get my brake lights to go off. I went ahead and ordered the seat extensions too. Hope I have a good report for you next week!

Edit: Found this vid at cjpony that demonstrates the install…

Apparently the SW-864 switch is not available anywhere. The SW-863 may be the best alternative and is what most vendors are substituting. It is the same except for a heavier spring (more pedal pressure to activate the stop lights). NPD sent me a SW-862 for my 70 Cougar. It has both the heavier spring and the hole and slot for the brake pedal are on the opposite sides from the 862 & 863. WCCC is substituting a Scott Drake switch that is equivalent to the SW-863. AutoZone will sell you a F4814 which is like the 863. I don’t know about the reliability of any of the alternates. I haven’t tried to buy a Motorcraft brand SW-863 yet.

So I got the Scott Drake from WCCC, but I didn’t get the bushing kit. Once I got that, it was all good. While I was at it, I did the seat extensions, which is a must for al big/tall dudes. The front threaded bolts threaded up instead of down, so I gotta go back and fix that…but otherwise, mission accomplished!

One of the Ford dealer websites shows both the SW-864 and 863 switches as discontinued. I found a few Motorcraft SW-863’s on ebay. I’ve got one coming but don’t know if it’s old stock or more recent therefore don’t know about the quality. If you don’t mind changing them the Duralast one is only $7.99. The SW-862 will be difficult to install since the slotted hole is on the wrong side.
