Brake Lights Turn On Late

I’ve recently discovered that my brake lights don’t come on until the pedal is pushed down pretty far and I think sometimes when I come to a stop slowly and am not pressing on the pedal hard they might not be coming on at all. I thought maybe the switch needed adjustment, but I stuck my head under the dash and didn’t see anyway to adjust the switch. Is there some sort of adjustment I might be missing or do you think my switch just might be wore out?

It’s a $10 part. I think I’d change it out just to be safe.

You probably have a manual brake switch (takes more force to actuate) where a power brake switch (takes less force to actuate) belongs.

I’m not worried about the money as much as if I put a new one in there and it does the same thing, but like you said for the price might be a good place to start. I was also wondering if one from my local parts house is good or if there is a certain brand that is recommended. I’m starting to not trust all these parts houses with so much junk coming from overseas.

My car has power brakes. Are you saying someone may have put a manual brake switch in?

Yes.

Ok might be best to just get a new one so I know it’s right and has a new one and go from there.

If you don’t get a Cougar spesific switch, then get one for a Thunderbird, as they have the same amount of tail lights, Mustang switches thend to be too weak and fail quicker, due to they have less lights in the rear

You can remove the Brake Light Switch and install a ‘shim’ between the booster cylinder rod and the switch plate. Or, like JETEXAS says, replace it with a repro part to be safe.

great tip, thanks!!

Was running my 67 got in and hit the brakes power shut off. nothing works. What should i check?

Does the battery have power?

check fuses first

Battery cables. When you hit the brakes it pulled a bunch of current and a poor connection will some times open up. The fact that nothing works tells you that you need to look at the battery and its connections first.
