buck tag

The buck tag on my all original 1968 Cougar XR7 was subjected to a coat of undercoating when the car was undercoated by the dealer when new. I have been attempting to clean it off but have had no luck so far. I have tried brake fluid (works great on paint but not undercoating), gasoline, as well as acetone to no avail. I don’t want to start scraping away at it for fear of scratching the tag. Any ideas? Also, does Legendary Cougar magazine still exist? Thanks in advance for any input.

Try GOO GONE or garage type hand cleaner. LCM does still exist. They are in need of more subscribers to allow volume 3(it thinks it’s volume 3) to go forward. Again I think, there are one or two volume 2 editions left. So subscribe up, tell your friends. I would hate to see a break in their actin due to low subscriptions.

Every issue of LCM is still available. I have all of Volume 2 in stock (we are working on the final issue of volume 2 right now). I will have all of Volume 1 back in stock on Tuesday or Wednesday when the reprint arrives from the printer.

Undercoating is tough. I left a buck tag in sealed container filled with gasoline and it barely budged it. I pulled it out and used steel wool on it every time the top layer got soft. It took a while but I got it pretty clean.

How about WD-40, works on so many things.
We use military grade preservative, similar to undercoating, on parts.
WD-40 takes it right off.

You might try 3M spray adhesive remover…if all else fails it’s worth a try

The 3M spray adhesive remover worked great. I sprayed some on, let it sit for about a minute and it brushed right off with an old toothbrush. This left it with a dull gray finish that I was able to polish off with steel wool. It’s now just as shiny as new. Thanks for all the replies.

I am glad you found something that worked, but you know they were painted black along with the support they attached to.

AWESOME! Glad it worked for you!

The buck tag was installed at the earliest stage of unit body assembly. It was never shiny when the car left the factory. It was oversprayed by body color and the under hood semi gloss black.

This thing was so thick with undercoating that it was illegible. I was referencing the fact that after cleaning the front appeared as shiny as the back. It will be given a light coat of semi gloss black and reinstalled.
