Blank paint code, painted a color other than was offered on a Cougar in 1968. In this case Calypso Coral or “3”.
I also have a copy of the order sheet. Originally it was supposed to also have the GT option and space saver spare tire. Those pieces put it over for the loan. So a $90 refund was issued for the deletion of “Disc brakes, performance handling package, etc…”.
Are you only looking for original documents, or will the Marti-produced window stickers work for your purpose? I can scan the Marti window sticker for my R-code, but the original docs are long gone.
That '68 R code GT really is an interesting car. The GT Performance Group option is a new item I had never seen listed before. And the tires are listed as a N/C item with the Traction Lok axle. This is odd because they are part of the GT group and also part of the 428CJ package as well.
Huh. I don’t know which seems more “wonky”; the '68 with a 390 that cost less than the AM/FM Stereo; or the 428CJ that cost less than the Air Conditioner it was powering. Even though I was living right here in Yuma in 1968, the CJ would have been a non-A/C car if I had bought it… or maybe not; I was only 6-7 at the time.
Can’t wait to see this whole project come to fruition; I’d love to see what my plain Jane H-code XR-7 would have cost in terms of an 11-year-old’s weekly allowance
How does the GT option show up on non-CJ cars in 1968?
On Tracktion Lok-equipped non-GT/non CJ cars, do the tires still show up as a N/C item for the rear end? Since the CJ cars all got the 31 spline axles, maybe the tires were linked to that option.
It looks like if you got Traction Lock, the tires were listed under that option. I need to see more window stickers to be sure. I have found a couple of errors in the window stickers from Marti on VERY obscure stuff. I wish there were more original stickers surviving.
That is because prior to getting the invoices from Lois, I don’t think Kevin was 100% sure on the order of things on the window stickers or in some cases even the correct spelling as there would be differences between Ford and Mercury as well as variances with certain option packages. The invoices have solved that issue as they correlate to the Mulroney (window) sticker.
When I had the reproduction sticker done for 0F91G526086 (January, 2001), Kevin requested and received a photocopy of the invoice in order to make it correct. I also have Marti reports and depending on what year, different naming of the options.
1999 Super Drag Pack
2000 Higher Ratio Axle
Locking Differental (on a separate line)
2005 Super Drag Pak
Dave, I am not completely certain that even the original invoices were not subject to variance. So many things were still being done by hand back then. There is also the issue of mid year changes. At some level of cost Ford could have eliminated every error, but to what benefit? If Ford makes an error of sorts, it would only follow that the same error would be present in the data that Kevin works from.
One of the things we are going to do with this project is to link to Kevin’s site and tell people “For the real deal, go to the source: Marti Autoworks.” By no means are we claiming to be more authoritative than MAW.
I think that Bill has done a GREAT job on this and I truly appreciate the time and effort this must be taking him to get this right. THANK YOU, Bill!!!
Marti has the IBM cards codes for each VIN number. Like Bill said, were done by hand, and there were mid year or running changes.
On my January 1969 built, R code, drag pack Cougar, which I have the #1 copy of the window sticker. It states “High Performance Axle” as the option that makes it a Drag Pack. My corresponding Marti report shows “Optional Axle Ratio” (Drag Pack after 2/20/69).
Kevin Marti likely has recognized the text changes from Ford on those Marti Reports that he generates.
Thanks to the support of Scott Taylor I now have what I would estimate as at least 100 new invoices, window stickers and other documents to use to get this right. Whew! Jay has started a major revision of the user interface to deal with the sequence issues experienced by the Beta testers (gee, what happens if I pick a 4 speed before I pick the 427? LOL!) I will reset the parameters for each option and then we will see if we have made it rubber bullet proof.
