Burled Walnut update - WCCC producing decals in-house

I think it looks great, would be good to see and example of the original dash up beside it as well.
The XR7G console kit for the two strips and switch bezel, Dash and so on, is this a different material from what Scott Gregory was selling. I got one of his kits, but if the material that you are using is different, I will probably get the kit you have to match the door pulls, dash and console.

Although the 67/8 dash looks much better than an old crappy faded out one, it also looks wrong. In some cases not being 100% correct can look a little bit nicer than the original. For me this isn’t one of them.

I haven’t seen that material personally, but I’m guessing that ours is different. Do you have any pictures of it? The good thing about using our stuff is that we’ll be making overlay kits for every piece, so everything in the interior will match.

Yeah, I’m a little on the fence myself about it, but I want to see it installed in a car before I really pass my own personal judgement. I think it could potentially look really good, or maybe just “wrong” like you say. Obviously it would be great if we could find a better match for the 67-8 XR7 woodgrain, and if that happens we will definitely implement it.

Of course, if you do the dash, you’ll want to do the steering wheel center too. So yesterday we cut out some overlay blanks, which will be sold as a DIY type of deal. Here’s how it looks once you install it:

We also shot a video in the heat of the moment, to show some tips on how to install this piece. This is Darrell, the guy responsible for making these overlays for us.

Also available now are new chrome (plastic) console inserts with the burl wood overlay already installed, for 1969 and 1970. At least these are correct looking!

Thanks Don!
I’m looking forward to the overlay kits for the '68 XR7’s. Since I’m doing somewhat of a restomod the slight difference will not bother me so much as long as it looks good. If you do find a woodgrain pattern that matches the original that would be good too.

The dash and steering wheel insert pattern is such an oddball I doubt we will ever find a close match. What is funny is that it is a close match to the overhead console wood-grain. The pull strap covers were yet another pattern so at least with the kit we are developing all pieces will match as they did on 69 and 70. I would never use this on a real original car, rare car or a top notch resto buts lets face it, who can afford this type of absurdity or this?

The OEM stuff was quite different from the door pulls, dash, over head console and center console. Hmmmm and quite accepted as well.

We finally installed this vinyl on a '68. Our inventory manager Javier (who you may remember from the convertible top video we did) recently bought this '68 XR-7 that sorely needed some love in the dash department. So it was a perfect opportunity to install a rechromed bezel along with this vinyl overlay kit over the faded original woodgrain. (See also: 1967 kit)

This is what the interior looked like before we did anything:

Here’s how it turned out, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I was kinda on the fence at first about using this non-original woodgrain, but since the kit includes everything, it’s all consistent throughout the whole interior and the result looks great in my opinion. Pretty amazing transformation.

New dash emblem of course. We’re going to include these with the dash bezel rechrome / restoration service whenever that gets up and rolling.

You can view the above photos in high resolution here.

While we were doing this process we shot a video, showing how to remove the dash assembly, and dash pad, and also how to remove the woodgrain fascias and plastic bezels (to be sent to us for rechroming) and do some other improvements while you’re in there. That video will be finished sometime in January maybe? Will post it here when it’s done. We’re also going to do one specifically about how to apply this vinyl to the dash fascias, at some point. Stay tuned!

That looks nice, especially with the new chrome.

I think it’s great that WCCC is attempting to match a need in the marketplace by offering these kits. I’m sure there will be plenty of people who are quite happy with the new decals however, there is no way I’d put that in one of my cars. It looks totally wrong to me.

Can you do a mirror image set for RHD, with a/c
?

yep it would look a whole lot better if the gauge rims had been chromed as well

I think it looks good, quite a transformation. If you are not looking for that trailer queen look, It fits the bill.

I agree with Leon that it needs the chrome bezels on the gauges. That was my first thought, actually, when I looked at the pictures. The burled pattern is similar to what I used on CatVert, except that I did have the chrome bezels. This picture shows the difference that makes:

The dark areas of the burled pattern pretty much require the chrome contrast to avoid darkening the dash too much. I like this pattern and will probably use it on B3Cat when I do the interior, since that car will be a mild custom. But it will also have the chrome bezels.

Wow, the chrome rings makes the instruments look classy

Yep I’m sure we could do that. Give us a call and talk to Darrell (he’s usually the one answering the phone these days) since he’s the one that cuts out the vinyl. He’d be happy to make a mirrored set for you. How did you mirror-image your bezels anyway? Would like to see a picture of that!

That looks awesome. Very cool / classy custom touch.

Yep it’s kind of subjective, using the different woodgrain, but it seems like the best option for now until we find a better match (if we ever do). Of course, those wanting to stay original will have to pay the big bucks for Grade A, non-faded panels.

I suppose some people have tried staining / varnishing the panels with something to bring back the color without losing the grain? Anyone?

I’ve used brown shoe polish and had good luck but I haven’t had to do it to a severely faded panel. But Javier’s original panels look like they’d make a good test case for it.
