Remember a while back when we were all excited about finding a very close match to the original simulated burled walnut applique found on Cougars? Well, after some months of trying to coordinate with various suppliers to have our newfound vinyl put on their parts with no real success, our very own Darrell stepped up to the plate, saying he knew how to use and program a vinyl plotter. So to make a short story shorter, WCCC now has a new toy to play with…
Thanks to Darrell’s efforts, we now have our first vinyl-covered part available to order… a complete reproduction radio bezel with the burled walnut applique for 1969-1970 XR-7. See on our website here. In this case, we’re selling it only as a complete assembly. Not sure if we have plans to offer just the vinyl overlay kit by itself, but that will be the case with some other parts down the road.
Also coming soon: overlay for the 1967-1968 (only correct for '68) overhead console. Here are a couple pics of a prototype, seen installed on a repro '67 light bar (fitment will be improved on the final version):
Another one we’re pretty much done with is the steering wheel center inserts for the 1969 XR-7. This is one that we would probably offer as a decal kit by itself, or as a fully restored, assembled center piece.
The pics below show the prototypes installed on a decent original center piece. Obviously the fully restored ones will look a lot better, and the vinyl will fit a little tighter.
Stay tuned for! I’ll be updating this thread as soon as new parts become available to order.
This is great news for Cougar owners. WCCC’s takes our hobby to the next level. The possibilities of the plotter/cutter is endless. We have a similar machine on my part time job that we use to make street signs throughout the city. My department head was kind enough to let me use it to make the display board that I use for my Cougar at shows.
Well done guys! To bad I have no wood grain needs for my cat.
Steven
Those decals look great Don!
Can you do one for the DIN style replacement radio face? (69 XR7)
I settled on the mustang woodgrain version since the burled walnut wasn’t available, and it just bugs me that all my interior pieces won’t match.
Someone really needs to do a cost effective DIN bezel (and of course woodgrain as Daryl is asking about). The JME billet ones are unobtanium and obsurdly priced if you could get one.
Who makes the current repro’s? Scott Drake? The tooling should be cloned, a few mods and voila! I took a repro, cut it out to the right height and width until I hit the sides and then blew the sides out using a heat gun. The chrome cracked on the sides but since those areas are just painted dark brown anyway, I color matched and touched those areas up.
This would be a good selling piece, especially since it fits 'stang too.
Here is my version using (also modified) JCC woodgrain (when it was still available):
Notice I cut out around the two screws at the top as they tend to pull at/distort the vinyl woodgrain. WCCC, you might want to consider this, my tip to “you’s guys”
Also, I made a couple of simple brackets so the DIN chassis would have more than just the bezel as support (since you cannot use the OEM bracket with a DIN chassis):
Regards,
Bob
P.S. The bezels I believe Daryl is referring to are KHE (Ken Harrison Enterprises - or at least one of the them is) and these I understand are REALLY FLIMSY and look little like the original in most every detail.
Yes! The current ones on the market are crap, look wrong and are stupid money… All I need is an investor to cough up about $10k and we will do the rest, we have the supplier, we have a good demand considering it fits Mustang, all we need is a someone to write the check and consign them with us. I have over 30 repros I am going to do, one or two every 6 months. If I can get some more people on board I can get them all done in the next year or two. The next one I want to do is the 69 fuel door lens. I can do a spot on unit for less than the current not so nice one if I do 500, just need about $20k on that one. Any takers? These are profitable parts and will provide a NICE return on the investment but WCCC can only do so much in any given year.
OOPs, I forgot to send you an update on my email since it has changed. Is the sale still on for today?
Also, in your description of the overlay’s, you show one with the black and silver around it. Is this just a photoshop image or was the overlay cut to fit the center part and not the black and silver?
I will email you with my new email.
Here is a picture of what Im talking about.
All you have to do to get back on our mailing list ishit the button on our site on the right hand side. No photoshop here, the 68 decal is small so it fits inside the border. If your boarder is scratched or heavily faded this will not look so good and you will want to use the 67 version.
Thanks Don,
I sent in the new emil and I have a question, The XR7-G wood grain for the console switch and the two strips up both sides, is this the same as the one’s Scott Gregory was selling some time ago, or is this a different material? I have a set of the stuff he was selling now and with the wording for each switch. It has a glossy look to it, yours looks a little more like the original in the pictures and not totally smooth. Just wondering.
Here are a couple pics of the XR7-G console kit we just finished making. Luckily we had this console, already missing the wood grain, to use as a guinea pig. Coincidentally, we just sold it.
For the moment, we haven’t figured out the best way to do the “FOG” and “ROOF” lettering next to the switches, but that’s something we hope to tackle.
Comparison shot below - it’s definitely not the same, but it does look pretty good!
What do you guys think about this as a dash overlay for 67-8 XR-7? It’s obviously not the same wood grain as the original pattern, but we think it looks pretty nice. Would be a good way to spruce up (or should I say ‘walnut up’?) a faded dash! We’ll probably end up doing a video or two on installation, because it’s kinda tricky on parts like this.
