C80f-12127-ddistributor

I have been looking for a c80f-12127-d for my hertzg, for quit some time. The engine needs to be rebuilt, and the motor was built in early January. Would the correct date code for this distributor be 11of 67 and 12 of 67? Also I came across this clean 1212d distributor date code 8f19 = June 19 68 The seller offered to sell it to me for $ 450.00. Just figuring out If I should buy this distributor and keep it until I find the correct date code one.

Thanks Scott

That one looks like an obvious restamp. A lot of that going on with the more valuable distributors these days. Whoever that seller is you should avoid purchasing anything from them in the future.

I would expect that your car came with a distributor manufactured a month or two before the engine assembly date so your thinking is sound there.

A month or two before is a good rule of thumb but not always the case. Jeff Speegle can help you nail down something more specific.

How do you tell if it is a re stamp. On this specific distributor is the area where the date code and part number to crisp and detailed?

Thanks Scott

I am holding a 8F18 dated C8OF-D in my hand, the pictured part is a restamp. A genuine part would have a higher asking too they are in high demand and there are not enough to go around.

The font is wrong, and the characters are too unevenly stamped. The factory stampings were shallower than these too.

Plus on the date code - it’s clear they retained the original “19” stamping while changing the rest.

Sorry thought I had more pictures taken of all the new distributors (boxed and “sealed” in 1968) I have out in the garage to see the variations between the stampings originally during the 68 production period but here are two I had handy. You will see some variations in the fonts used which makes things tricky IMHO. Appears that in some cases some of the number sets were stamped at different times, places or by different workers

Not saying that someone has not been playing with the one for sale in the first post just offering some originals to compare with from the same time period

Thanks for the info Jeff, and good pictures to compare . Also Jeff If you happen to know of anybody selling one of of the 12127-d distributors let me know.

Thanks Scott

I have a C8OF 12127-D in my 1968 XR7 GT (automatic) with a date code of 7M8. My 68 was missing the distributor and lots of other expensive one year only parts when I bought it years ago to restore. I believe since my XR7 was produced in late December 1967 with an automatic transmission, I should have the C7OF 12127-F distributor. However, I have been looking for this C7OF-F distributor for many years and I have had no luck finding one close to my build date. If I luck out in finding a C7OF-F, I would be happy to sell you the one in my XR7 GT for what I paid for it. ($400 plus shipping)
