Car won't start possible ignition switch??

67 Cougar Base…I have replaced my starter solenoid and battery & starter but still won’t turn over with key.I hear the click in the ignition when I turn the key on but it won’t turn motor over …yet it did turn over once .then it never did it again…my old starter solenoid I could bump it over by Arcing it off with a screw driver and it would start…I tried to do the same the with the new solenoid but wouldn’t crank. Also thought the first solenoid was defectI’ve but the second one did not help. Can someone give my some advice on this problem please!! Thank you!!

Neutral safety switch?

Take all the grounds off and clean, might fix it

Are you getting a solid clunk from the solenoid when you jump it and does the same thing happen with the ignition switch?

If the solenoid is working then the next part of the path is from there to the starter. You can check for 12+ volts at the starter side of the solenoid and then at the starter but that doesn’t prelude a bad cable which would show 12v but not pass enough amperage to turn the starter.

You could also have any of these components be bad even if they are new.

Get an actual load tester for the battery and test it.

Take the starter off and CAREFULLY bench test it. You need to restrain it somehow as the high torque will make it jump as you energize it. I would clamp it to the bench top and using your battery (or a known good one) and a set of jumper cables ensure that it spins.

Take a GOOD look at the cable between the starter and the solenoid. It can look fine at the ends and be corroded up inside the insulation. Easiest thing to do is just replace it.

As has been said… check all the grounds. Make sure the starter mounting surface is clean and that there’s a GOOD ground from the block back to the battery.

I’ve had several vehicles that had odd electrical gremlins that were solved but running a dedicated ground from the battery to either the block or to an alternator mounting bolt.

Sounds like the battery may be bad. You need to get it tested under load. The local Autozone can do this. Also, it is very important to have clean tight connections at the battery. If you have those replacement clamps that clamp to the cable using a bolt on each side, they don’t work. Throw them away and go to the auto parts store and buy replacement cables with molded on clamps, in the correct length. Clean the connections at the starter and the block and you will be good to go for the next 50 years.

I agree with the other posts suggesting to replace the cables and clean the ground point at the block. I had the same issue with my ‘67 and I figured it was the starter. I changed the cables and cleaned the block and I have had flawless starts ever since.

Hey thank you so much for the info on my cougar.I’ll check out these things after Xmas !! By the way merry Christmas!!

I’ll check that out thanks bud!!

I will try that thank you and merry Christmas!!

I will try that thank you and merry Christmas!!

thank you for the info ill give it a shot!!! Merry Christmas

I had problems with starter changed it. But I have to disconnect my cables from the car or the battery just dies. ?? I’m not sure why it dies maybe I’m suppose to turn it on every day?? New battery with warranty I have ran thru 3 batteries luckily I had insurance to keep replacing or 20$ upgrade

Welcome to the forum, I would like to offer a suggestion, You will need a volt meter or a test light , with the battery cable disconnected and voltmeter on, connect one lead to battery post and the other to the cable, you should see voltage, that is something drawing from battery, start pulling fuses one at a time until there is no more voltage shown, then find out what that fuse provides power to and you will know where your problem is or where to look,
