My carb is leaking fuel badly when accelerating. It appears to be coming through either the gasket where the carb attaches to the spacer plate or through the spacer plate gasket itself. I plan on rebuilding the carb. Can you take a look at this picture and tell me is that two spacer plates? If so, in addition to the carb rebuild kit gasket I would then also need two spacer gaskets, correct? Also, do these gaskets need gasket sealer or do you just tighten down the carb to seal the gasket? Thank you.
It is one piece cast, hence the casting ridge around the outer side.
I’ll add that my 65 cyclone carb was warped enough I had to use two gaskets
Looks 1 piece, so 2 gaskets should be fine, no gasket sealer.
But it’s almost impossible for gas to spray out from around there. Since you do not have a boosted application, the intake manifold is never pressurised. at best in full acceleration it’s around 1" of vacuum.
I suspect it’s coming from the accelerator pump diaphram? That is the most common fail point.
Side note - what’s the set up? Car, engine, carb? I see the Flame Thrower coil, and the old solenoid. Is that a stock 2v Autolite? Thx
The PCV spacer needs 2 gaskets. Your kit should come w/ one.
BE CAREFUL HERE!!!
The gaskets you can buy are too small & will leak (vac). Also check the one in the kit!
I can’t recall what gaskets I get, but it was a chore finding any that fit correctly. Felpro #55 does NOT work!
Bluestuff Thanks. I thought that ridge in the middle was another gasket
68 Hertz Good to know. Thanks.
Hanver Thanks. I don’t know much about carbs. Still learning. Is the accelerator pump diaphragm something that would be part of the rebuild kit or do I have to buy an additional part? Is that easy to replace?
Wbferran This is a 1967 Cougar XR7, automatic, a/c model. I believe the carb is a 1968 Autolite 4300 4V carb? Tag data photo attached below.
Cougar Bill A picture is worth a thousand words. Thanks for the heads up on the gasket.
The diaphragm will come in the kit. Mine used to leak ALL time.
Thank you very much!
Joe,
The Felpro #55 gasket will work between the carb and the spacer, but will not work between the spacer and the manifold as Bill shows. You need this gasket between the spacer and the manifold:

The Autolite 4300 has a lot of little quirks when rebuilding them. They have a 2 step needle and seat system. If not properly adjusted they will flood like crazy. The original float is a solid “nytrol” float and they are known to soak up gas and sink. Here is a link to one of the best sources of 4300 parts:

I rebuild and ship these carbs across the country. I wet test everyone on a 302 to ensure they are dialed in and perfect. Just sent two rebuilt ones to Nebraska for a 68 Shelby and a 68 High Country Special. I do not do concurs pickeling or coatings. I do Holley’s, Carters, and Rochester carbs as well as the Autolite series of carbs.
Of all the carbs I rebuild the 4300 is the least understood. I can step you through the rebuild, but will need to talk to you on the phone with lots of pictures.
Rob
So Joe, how is this coming along?
