Carburetor issue - 1968 302 4 barrel

My car was running smoothly and then I took the air cleaner assembly off to clean and paint it. Now the engine won’t stay running. I can get it to fire pouring fuel down the choke but it won’t stay running.

I have a 1968 tock Cougar. J Engine (302 with a 4 barrel carburetor). I do not have the original Autolite 4300. It is a C-853 Autoline rebuild with only 30,000 miles on it.

I’ve checked and fuel is being pumped into the carburetor.

I’m not sure what I should be checking for to resolve this issue.

Kjkostuk, check to see if one of your vacuum lines did not get re-connected, towards the rear of the carburetor to the manifold, or up under the air cleaner assembly. Or a spark plug wire may have gotten pulled loose, either at the distributor or at a spark plug.

Vacuum lines are all connected and spark plug wires are all solidly connected. Still nothing.

I have a 68 XR-7 with a original Autolite 4300 (302 / 4 barrel) that was professionally rebuild and flowed on the east coast. Many problems with this carb. Car runs OK, but small fuel issues. Horrible reviews through the years. Anyone offer a better alternative?

The earlier 4100 is an excellent carb; one of the best designs that Ford produced. It was used in 1967.

4300 is a fussy carb for sure. Mine kept plugging the idle circuits with sediment and would completely stop idling like yours. Replaced the entire fuel system to fix the problem. Runs great now after pulling the 4300 off and cleaning it out 3 times. But now have ongoing issues with carb fuel leaks. If your problem turns out to be the carb, there a lot better options than fussing with the 4300. Yours might be the 440 cfm version, mine is 600 cfm for the 351c. I’ve also heard the 4100 is great. What are the best aftermarket replacements for the 4300? Holley maybe?

Here you go, runs great right out the box.
