I’ve got a 68 cougar (base) and I’m not sure if it ever had a center console was that an option? And I’m also wondering does anyone know of a b&m shifter and boot will fit in the center consoles
A console was an available option for any 1967-1973 Cougar. You can purchase a Marti report to see if your car was originally equipped with a console. Unless an aftermarket shifter is made specifically for a 1967-1968 Mustang/Cougar than I think that you would have some custom work to do to make the shifter fit, look nice and function properly.

What is the purpose of an aftermarket shifter for an automatic? Is it better for manual shifting? It doesn’t change the actual performance of the transmission itself.
You answered your own question. If its not function related, the it must be personal taste and sense of aesthetics. You dont have to stay on the plantation!
I see a lot of them. And they are not cheap. I thought I was missing something. I modified my son’s factory shifter so it was easier to manually shift to 2nd without hitting drive
How did you achieve that
I think the advantage would be to manually shift from first to second without going straight into drive
That is exactly right. You start in first, then just push forward to second, and then you have to push the button to go into third. I did end up leaving a slight indent from first to second cause it was a little too easy to shift. There is a series of steps between the shifter positions. I used a file and a grinder to modify things.
