Chrome paint for door trim?

Hi all, I’ve been working on the interior for awhile now. I managed to find some cool chrome paint I brushed on. Unfortunately, it isn’t drying. After waiting a few days and clear coating over it, the clear coat came off. What’s the process folks use to re-do the chrome on the door cards and back inserts? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You might be better off using an adhesive chrome foil. Paint won’t stick to the plastic used on door panels.

Model car builders use a product called Bare Metal Foil.

I sanded everything down and then started with the SEM Black landau interior paint. The chrome then went over that, and then was clear coated. After spending way too many hours on it, I’m tempted to just go all black and call it a day.

What I did on my panels was peel all the dry yellowing plastic that covers the chrome foil type material off then sanded and painted. I used an argent type silver vs trying to paint chrome. The walking cat logo I used a chrome pen on which worked great

Try Molotow chrome paint pens

If you use foil, make sure you use an adhesive for foil otherwise the foil will lift when you touch it.

I have used this stuff back when I built models, it’s pretty fragile and doesn’t have strong adhesive. It’s ok on models that don’t get touched ever but it wouldn’t work well inside of a car

+1 for Molotow Liquid Chrome paint pens, it’s probably the most chrome-like paint I’ve seen.

You can get a “refill” bottle of the Molotow paint, thin it and apply with an airbrush

I tried the Molotow Chrome paint pens in an air brush. I agree it has the most chrome looking finish but even after it sat for weeks, it never cured where you could handle it without leaving fingerprints in the finish.

I used Spaz Stix on my Passenger side XR7 dash and it worked out nicely. You will never get a true chrome look from any of the paint options but Spaz Stix was close enough for me. Check out the first page of my build for the results.

My concern is nothing I try will actually dry and stick. I used a UV curable clear coat but that didn’t bond to the chrome. Tempted to just take it off and make it black. Any other suggestions?

Aluminum tape for like taping duct insulation on is what I used on mine. It worked quite well but tedious work with an exacto knife. You can lightly polish that stuff to get a bit more shine to it also.

Hey hey, that’s a great idea. Fine detail exacto work is something I have a lot of experience with. I think I’ll try that.

On the tape idea, you can also get mylar tape, which is very shiny, and maybe more durable than aluminum tape? But same problem, tricky to cut out and get it to conform. I tried it on my 68 standard door panels initially and it looked great, but I realized it would be problematic in the curved sections of the trim. Yours might be easier though since it doesn’t have curves.

The main problem is with the soft plastic used for that type of trim. Very difficult for paint to adhere to it. If it does, it never dries.

I was able to peel that layer off and get down to the base molded rubber which took paint well.

Diesel, I did sand it down the rubber. What type of paint did you use?

Did you peel the chrome foil/tape off as well.

I had originally used the SEM titanium metallic then changed it to argent silver using the motorcraft ford paint

I used the model foil on a set of 1969 Decore door panels recently, and they came out very nice. It is self stick, and has a good adhesive. Bought it on ebay for around $20. One package was enough to do both door panels. Take your time and use an exacto-knife, and it will turn out nice!

Molotow after you remove the deteriorating clear off

What was the name of it, was it Chrome Bare-Metal Foil or something else.
