Cleaning build sheet

I dug out the build sheet on the 428CJ 4spd Cougar a couple of months ago, and it has been sitting on the counter top wondering what to do with it. The sheet is heavily tar stained and not readable. I remember seeing a post (maybe on this site) on how to clean a tar stained build sheet, but can’t find a post using the search function. Does anybody know how to clean a tar stained build sheet?

Brian, here’s a link to a reply that I posted on the other forum:http://mercurycougar.net/forums/showthread.php?42893-0F02E156150-Build-sheet-dont-know-what-it-was&p=378992#post378992 ,it’s post #8 on the thread. Also, if you scroll up to post #6, Mitch Lewis (blackcat429cj) also posted a solution how to clean a build sheet. Credit the Dec. '07 issue of Mustang Monthly in regards to my reply on the link. Good luck. John

Thanks  I’ll give that a try.

You’re welcome. Post, which solution you tried and what the results were.

It always bothers me when I look at a post for a car on Craigs List and read interesting discussion, but the ad is gone so you can’t see what the car looked like… And so it goes with a bunch of tech stuff like this. If we put the answer in the thread it will be here in the future, put in a link and you never know.

Dec. '07 issue of Mustang Monthly but someone found there buildsheet that was dark and unreadable between the floor and the carpet underlayment and asked Bob Perkins how to remove the discoloration and this is what Bob said in the article:We use PPG DX440 Wax & Grease Remover. Pour enough into a plastic container to fully submerge the buildsheet. After about 10 minutes, remove the buildsheet and it should be good as new. You may need to repeat the process with fresh DX400.

Take a flat pan - fill with mineral spirits - soak for about 30-45 minutes - it will remove the black and make the sheet very readable!

And props to 68 Puma for finding this! You are making a very appreciated contribution to the forum, so please do not take this as any sort of criticism and keep up the good work. Thanks!

You’re welcome Bill and thanks for the props  ! It never entered my mind to consider your post a criticism at all, I’m happy I was able to contribute. John
