I’m sure there is a trick to this and somebody here knows it:
Is there a way to remove/reinstall the clutch assist spring without having the entire pedal hanger assembly out of the car? I’m talking about the large spring under the dash which connects the clutch pedal to the spring bracket on the pedal hanger assembly. This is on a 68 4 speed with power disc brakes.
Steve, have you looked in the shop manual for the disassembly procedure. Its not easy its a very strong spring and it should have a plastic cressent shaped insulator on each end of the spring.
I think you have no choice. I would remove the driver’s seat, steering column and then the pedal assembly. It’s not that hard or time consuming. Basically removing parts and replacing parts. I bet you can do the entire job in two hours.
Ahhhh…there is a trick that I’ve read about. When the spring is fully extended (as much as you can), stick coins between the coils. Now move the clutch to where the spring is as short as possible. If you are lucky, it will fall right out. Putting it back in is just the reverse, but much more difficult to maneuver.
