i have a borg-warner T56 tranny in my 69 coupe . has anybody installed a clutch pedal safety switch ?does anyone have any ideas ?
I can shed some light on this but not any detail answers, perhaps this will help trigger some other responses to fill in. The cars with automatic transmissions come with a neutral start switch which is in the circuit for power to the starter relay to run the starter motor. It prevents the starter relay from pulling in unless the neutral start switch is closed in Park or Neutral. The Tremic T5 I recently installed in place of the original FMX automatic has a similar switch for Neutral. The complication with the T5 was that its switch was not rated for current draw of the starter solenoid. It worked for a while but became erratic. I had a choice of taking it out or adding a standard relay to pull in the Starter Solenoid. I’m running without it. The wiring diagram for the ‘69 should show the details for the Neutral Start switch for an automatic. You’ll need to get the information for the T56 which presumably has a switch internally like my T5. You might be able to find out if the T56 switch is rated for the starter solenoid current draw, otherwise you’ll need an smaller relay to be activate by the switch and pull in the solenoid.
How much current are you seeing?
I didn’t measure it. When I raised the question of the Tremec T5 switch not letting me start the car even in Neutral, I was told by the supplier that the switch was rated for connection to an ECU not for the draw of the Starter Solenoid.
Got it. Probably less than 1 amp rated.
my XR7 originally had an FMX in it . took a 98 viper T56 and installed it .i have to check if it has a neutral safety switch built into it . not quite the same as a tremec .
there’s no. neutral sefety switch on this tranny . i guess i have to make something up for the clutch pedal .
