I’ve got my '67 std interior in disarray, slowly getting everything back together.
When it comes to the console assembly, do any of you have a tip or two for the sequence of steps to get it (properly) re-installed?
I’m at odds with how these parts will go neatly back together:
- the console
- the plastic piece with the PRNDL indicator
- the light that illuminates part 2 above
- the sliding piece that goes around the shift lever
Connect the PRNDL assembly to the console first?
Does the light assembly just crimp onto the end of the selector slider?
I just recently figured I’ve got a missing console harness from the dash, so I’m in the process of replacing the dash harness.
Next step after is the console re-install. It’ll be nice to have a complete console again (purchased on eBay for $175 shipped)!
I wish they went back together as easily as they come apart!
Thank you, one and all,
Dan
I just reinstalled mine on my 68. The PRND21 assembly installs before the rest of the console. The light does not crimp but slides in a track and attaches to the shifter via a white plastic rod connector. If yours is the same as mine there are two mounting holes the whole assembly will sit right in them. The shifter slide should be in place prior. Then put the console base over the PRND21 assembly and there should be three mounting screws with a u-channel support flange and one single screw that is just to the left of the shifter. These will secure the two together. Then you will have to find the screw holes for the base of the console. I took 4" long finishing nails and a pair of vice grips and from under the car
using the vise grips to hold the nail and then push it through the holes in the in the center floor hump. Then I was able to align the screw holes from inside over the nails and then gently screwing each down over the nail until it forced it back out and the screw hits the mounting hole. Do not overtighten these screws. That should get you 80% there.
Yet another console question - this time concerning the wiring. I’ve got the Jim Osborn electrical assembly manual and it’s showing a black/blue stripe wire crawling down the transmission hump to feed the console harness from the right side of the shift lever opening (p. 45 and p.81). Unfortunately, page 45 doesn’t have a legend to detail what is what.
After a thorough search underneath the carpet where the console should sit, no wire found (did find the feed wire for the transmission selector indicator). Is it possible this could’ve been wired differently? Consoles with a clock had that feed wire coming in from the dash instead of from under the carpet (according to the diagrams I have).
I have my large finishing nails sticking up through the carpet, ready to act as guides for the console mounting screws. Frustrating to have this one little wire hold me up!
Dan I looked in my car and it appears my wires run above the carpet. What I see is two wires running to plugs in the harness then they run down behind the console storage area then underneath. It’s possible these are wires to the courtesy lights either way they are above the carpet and below the console. I hope this helps.

Console Wires In My 1967 Standard
That helps tremendously! I have since done some more digging and found a feed wire coming from the main dash harness. Unsure at this point if it’s for the under dash lighting or the console, but I have a feeling it’ll end up being console wiring!
Glad to help. Where was the harness feed at? That might give you a clue as to what they are for. The wire feed on mine is near the blower motor.
