Hi,
I’m just starting to restore my first Cougar. It’s a '69 XR7 convertible. I plan on pulling the motor today so I can clean up and repaint everything. Is there a book published that will let me know the correct colors things should be under the hood, including the motor. I see pictures where hood hinges and brake boosters are painted different colors. Typical things a person needs to know, like what color is the fan pulley…black or blue? Any suggestions as to where to look for the correct colors would be appreciated. Thanks for the help. Glen
Don’t believe there is anything that will fill the whole need. If there was it would likely be outdated the minute it was published. IMHO good forums with well researched answers which reflect the same plant and time period as your car is your best place for up to date and timely answers.
Some of the more basics or major pieces are spelled out in judging rules so I would start there. Ignore IMHO the need for paint daubs and markings and focus on getting the foundation (like the unibody, paint, patterns, products and such) correct first since its real hard to go back and correct these. Everything else is just bolt on so it can be corrected.
For parts your going to have to figure out how close your planning on going to original and how it will be stored and used. For example - will you be using the appropriate paints to try and reproduce the look of all the different kinds of bare metal that was found on these cars or will you be treating and oiling as you go with the original finishes.
Just an option - for a not so easy question. You’ll find allot of pictures on the internet. Most if not just about all will have owners choices rather than all the original/correct details.

Also, need the Marti report for your build date. Around April 1st they switched to painting the cowl vent area from body color to black. I have a unrestored 69 XR7 survivor with a 390 if you have specific questions.
Think you’ll find it depends on the assembly plant
Nice looking car
