Cougar Fastback Prototype

[1967_S_Code]

I found these pictures of a Cougar fastback prototype done by Ford. As seen in the pictures it looks like a Mustang with a different walking Cougar emblem in the grille corral. What appears to be same Cougar appears on the hubcap/rim center cap. The car also has different fender emblems than what appeared on the Mustang. Prototype pictures and stuff is just plain cool!

Very cool, i’m glad they took the step to take the cougar in a better direction, i like the seperation and disticntion our cats have and as we all know, you don’t see too many around

Over the bonnet of the second photo you can see 2 other vehicles, the 1 that you can only see the rear end of looks like that Cougar II concept car but what is the other 1 ???

One looks like an E-type and the other one looks like a Studebaker Avanti

That is a Mustang prototype. Even when the design was being finalized Ford still hadn’t settled on a name. The original designers wanted to call it the Cougar but at the last minute it was changed to Mustang. In Lee Iacocca’s autobiography he tells about how the designers took that Cougar emblem off this prototype and sent it to Lee with a note attached saying they never wanted Iacocca to forget what he should have called their car.

Cougar was then used later on “our” cars.

I googled 1962 Avanti Images and you are quite right
