Cougar group II images?

I thought I had a picture copy of ‘ how to sharpen your cats claws’ somewhere, but I can’t find it. Are there cougar parts specific somewhere on the web? And, has anyone ever actually seen a physical copy of the cougar lettered oil pan?

They are out there. I have one on my G, along with the Cougar intake.

I saw the interview with Dennis on my classic car. Yours is one fabulous collection of rare Mercury! Is there any way to determine how many of those pieces were sold?

That’s hard to say - apparently for a time they put some of the Shelby Cougar hop-up items on sale to move them - can you imagine!!

I can’t even- But knowing how much inflation has happened over the years, I can guess how expensive these were, back in the day. New Cougar’s were what, 2800 dollars? For the whole car. These were expensive upgrades at the time…

Here is a pic of one of the more rare Cougar group II items.

Wow. What other pieces are there? The intake, bell housing, anything else lettered like this? And, this would be an amazing thing to have!!!

Woodsnake, there is a Weber carburetor induction system /that says COUGAR on it.
Here is a link to an engine that has one on it: Rocket Robin millers xr7g force cougar engine / motor is 302 weber powered 450hp 428flbt 12sec1/4 - YouTube

I run an original 8V dual-quad oval air cleaner on my race car.
There were several versions of the oval air cleaner:

  • individually machined “COUGAR” letters (like mine)
  • cast “COUGAR” letter block (I have several loose ones)
  • aftermarket integral “COUGAR” lettering (aftermarket)
  • 4V version
Kevin Marti runs a 4V round air cleaner on his 1967 convertible.
You can see many parts in the January 1967 Motor Trend article, page 35.

Don’t forget the Cougar 9K tach.

Oddly enough, it was never used on the Group II cars.

And now I have a new goal in life- one each of all the above….does anyone have these? Or are they all one off advertisement gimmicks?

Kevin Marti probably has the biggest collection installed on his '67 convertible. The hardest parts to find are the bell housing and the Weber intake.

I look for all oddball Cougar items- I’ve never seen any of them in person-but I’m still alive so I’m still looking- thanks!

Here are a few more pics I have. I have never seen one of those Shelby “COUGAR” lettered valve covers. Bet not many sets were made.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen this picture of the valve covers before-Does Kevin Marti have pictures posted anywhere?

I bought the January Motor Trend magazine- very cool! But now there are even more unknown pieces!! Like the chrome air cleaner lid?? I would have thought that was pretty popular-

Here is a more detailed copy of that photo -

I think the chrome air cleaner setup was basically how the '67 GT350s came. But that cool running cat decal that is arched to fit the circle - those I have never seen.

Yes the black XR7-G in northern California has the Cougar oil pan and the Cougar single 4V intake on it. Great car.

Is that ‘just’ a decal on the lid? Or is it an emblem of some sort? I wonder if some of the Shelby crowd might have some input? Next time I go to the SAAC museum in Boulder, I will make some inquiries. They did mention that they have a group II car in storage some where- I think he said Utah…

Looks to me like a flat, two dimensional decal that has been applied to the factory Ford open element chrome air cleaner.

This may be a prototype that was cobbled together for the photograph - I have never seen a decal that resembles that one out in the wild.
