Cougar Performance Parts

Hi all,

Hoping this is the right place to post this, just joined the forum.

I live in Perth, Western Australia and have recently purchased a 1968 Cougar XR7 and I am trying to get it registered for the road here.

My issue is the previous owner fitted a very nice stainless exhaust system including extractors and I would like to keep them on. Our licencing people want evidence that extractors/headers were available as an option from Ford back in 1968.

I have found an Autolite Hi Performance catalogue from Ford that has performance exhaust parts however, it is for the Big Block engines.

I am looking for a similar catalogue for the small block Windsors. My car has a 302 Windsor fitted.

Does such a catalogue exist? and does anyone have a copy of it and would be willing to scan the cover page and exhaust page to send to me?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking forward top driving my Cougar legally on our roads!!

Here are some pages from the “How To Sharpen A Cougar’s Claws” folder which listed performance parts developed by Shelby American that Mercury offered for sale.

Those headers and exhaust are for the 289/302 engine.

Hope this helps and good luck!!

Way cool!!!

Welcome and I hope that works out for you. I def know the feeling of needing to drive it.

Thank you very much for the info. Hopefully the Authorities will accept it.

Cheers

Gary

Good luck, and incidentally why would they care if you have an aftermarket exhaust? Very few 60s vehicles sit on their original exhausts, and many muscle cars utilize aftermarket performance kits. Carroll Shelby, guilty as charged.

My 68 went from California to Sweden around 2009. God knows what paperwork ensued. That’s probably when it got the km/h speedo overlay. Is this a thing in Oz?

When I imported to The Netherlands, all the RDW cared about was seeing the VIN stamped on the unibody. Had to bust out wrenches and a scraper to accommodate.

Booked an APK / MOT / safety inspection and they said ‘better not waste your money, the car is grandfathered / exempt.’

Luckily (I guess) my 68 has the original, now leaky exhaust.

There are some VinWiki videos on how strict they are in Australia. CRAZY
