Cougar Turn Signal Wiring with a GM Tilt column

Recently, I’ve received a number of inquiries about how to wire the turn signal switch where an aftermarket tilt column with a GM turn signal switch has been installed. The answer depends on several items:

  1. 1967-68 or 1969-73 Cougar?
  2. Original or aftermarket sequential controller?
  3. Aftermarket harness? GM or Ford based?
  4. Original instrument cluster or aftermarket?

WARNING: A GM turn signal switch will not handle the 12.6A load from incandescent brake lights.
It will release the “magical smoke” shortly after installation.
This means that the system must be converted to LED bulbs. At the minimum, the rear bulbs must be changed.
The dash indicator relay (1967-68) or flashers (1969-73) must also be changed to LED compatible units.

I have developed solutions and schematics for most of these combinations.

Ididit makes a GM style tilt column with a Ford turn signal switch. It also is splined for a Ford steering wheel. Need to get a rag joint with Ford splined at both ends from Borgeson.

I got mine from CJ Pony Parts. Not installed yet, waiting to repaint part of the column.
