Could this be the lowest serial number 1968 in existence?

This must have been among the first Cougars made and sold in 1968. Could it be the earliest surviving 68? Weren;t the first few used for testing etc…Somebody needs to rescue this and bring it back to councours. I bet there are lots of historical photos of this particular cat back in 68.

Need to get Phil Parcells to run the VIN but it is the earliest one I have heard of. Looks to be in decent shape too.

Some pictures from the craigslist ad.

Lots of early documents still with this car too.

I’m sure more than one of us has noticed that this Cougar was also a San Jose assembly model. Making it even more unique !
Hope someone decides its a worthy candidate for a restoration.

I have seen this car and reported it to phil in the last year or so.

Originally purchased by C Manson…

I can’t believe this thread hasn’t garnered more interest.

Being a single digit" serial number, this is probably one of the most historically significant 1968 Cougars that has come along for a long time.

It would really help to have a Marti report on this one. The scheduled build date shows as August 21st 1967. If were a show car it would have shown a July 4th scheduled build date (Ford almost always does this.) The scheduled build date doesn’t determine the actual order that the cars were built. The Marti report will show the actual build date (except for pre production cars that will show the first day or two of production so they can properly be counted in the correct model year). Another oddity is the in service date of September 26th… Usually the first date that new models were to be sold was September 30th unless it fell on a Sunday. The dealer order book probably was open before the cars were shipping but I do not know that for certain. Most likely this would have been a regular order or possibly a stock order, but it also could have been a roll over if there was an unfilled order for a '67 model. The Marti will tell us all of this.
