Cover or garage

I’ve stripped everything off a '68 Cougar with rotted-out floor pans/frame rails and plan to shift it all back into a rust-free rolling shell that I bought after I get it painted. With winter approaching in Minnesota I was planning to bring the rolling shell into the garage. But part of me thinks I should buy a high-quality cover and leave it outside. Restoring the fenders and doors could keep me busy until spring but will be much more difficult to do with the shell inside my 2.5 stall garage. One stall is reserved for my wife’s car. What would you do?

Explain to her that parking in the driveway means there’s less snow to shovel.

I would put it inside and avoid getting moisture anywhere in the shell… a cover is not going to completely protect it from that.

BUT - If you haven’t started any metal stripping or rust repair, then I guess it wouldn’t be the end of the world at this stage.

You might want to look into renting some inside storage space. Storing outside with a cover can create condensation/moisture issues. No point making your job bigger than it already is. Dry unheated space is way better than parking on dirt with a cover.

Living in NH this is exactly the right answer

Daily drivers do not belong in garages. They go out every day, why do they need to be inside at night? Full disclosure: on snowy mornings I clean off the wife’s truck.

Garages are for projects (automotive & household), storage of classic cars & hanging out.

If you have room.
Good time to build a shop or add a stall to the existing garage.

Once banished to the outdoors it will likely stay outdoors. What project have you ever known not to take many times longer than planned?
Bad things happen to kitties left out in the snow. See the thread about the CJ 4-speed. Take care of your wife and her DD as suggested above.

Good for you on cleaning off the wife’s truck. But I’ve always made sure the wife’s vehicle was inside, YEAR ROUND. Around here, daily drivers DO go in the garage. Projects go in the SHOP… which is a totally separate entity from the garage. Only car and sometimes house projects go in the shop. It is not a place to store kids’ bikes, yard tools or lawn equipment. Kids’ bikes go in the garage and lawn equipment goes in the SHED.

I’m glad I was able to clear that up for you.

::cleans salt out of open wound:: Sigh, I remember when I had a SHOP & a garage. I still didn’t put daily drivers in there, I figured I could just have more “fun” cars.

Totally with you on the shed: that’s for bikes, skis, dirt bikes, 4 wheelers, thule boxes, snow blowers & lawn mowers. My shed is tightly packed, LOL

Now that my middle guy is about to drive, we are going to need a bigger parking area.
