So…just finished installation of the Daniel Carpenter repo fan shroud on 1970 Cougar with 24" radiator. 5 blade flex fan, no clutch - has about a 3" spacer on the fan. Fan is about 1 1/2" off the face of the radiator, nearly completely enshrouded - blades rub on the bottom.
Anybody use one of these shrouds before? Does it actually “fit” (fits to radiator fine) - Do I have to change the fan set-up? A/C has been removed. Any feedback appreciated.
I’m using the same shroud on my 70, and my 7 blade thermostat fan is centered in the opening. Is your radiator sitting all the way down in the mounts? Some of the repro radiators have a fatter tank that won’t slide all the way down in the mounting saddles.
I believe so; my radiator is a FoMoCo unit. I will check that though. I’m thinking the easiest way out is to buy a “different” spacer. How far is your fan from the radiator? (Thanks for the quick response – for now I have “just walk(ed) away…”)
My fan is also 1 1/2” from the radiator core. The round shroud fan opening at the bottom is about even with where the bottom tank solders to the core, but the opening at the top is about 2” above where the top tank solders to the core. Sounds like maybe my shroud is mounted higher than yours.
Thanks for the help Craig. I’ve got the shroud unbolted again, but it looks to sit just like yours does, about 2" above, nearly even at the bottom (to tank welds).
Another option as you pointed out is to shim up the motor mounts…nah.
I could gain about 1/4" to 3/8" by modifying the shroud mounting points, but it is practically laying on the cooling lines and petcock as it is. I’m thinking the issue might be the spacer (2 1/4"), if I go to a 2 3/4" it will move me to about an 1" from the radiator and still approximate 1/2 in 1/2 out on the fan relative to the shroud opening. It’s either that or looking for a 16 1/2" fan.
