dash lights

When I pull on the headlight switch the dash lights come on, but as I rotate the knob to brighten them they go out. Is it possible to clean or somehow repair the rheostat, or is time for a new switch? The reproduction units are apparently missing a bracket that must be removed from the original switch and reattached to the new one. Does anyone have any experience with these or is it best to hunt for a new old stock piece? !968 Cougar XR7. Thanks for any input.

Did that 3 years back. Not impossible, but you need patience and delicacy. I do not recall the exact procedure but I ended up sanding the rheostat spring and plates and that greatly improved its efficiency. Still in the car to date. By the way, it may be little tricky to remove, there is a button in the back of the switch that need to be push in order for the switch it to be pulled out. There also exist a special tool to remove the bezel (was item 19961 from WCCC - not sure if they still have it).
