Date codes on Holley List 4088 carbs

Guys,

I am looking for a correct date coded Holley 4088 for the GTE. I have been offered one with a late October 67 date code, and another with a late March 68 date code. The car is build date April 8 1968

Fortunately, when the original owner replaced the carb (The current carb on the car is a Holley 3310-2), they retained the original metal tag, which has a 7L8 (November 8, 1967) stamp.

I have heard from several sources that the Holley 4088s were built in short batches, so have only a limited number of date codes.

I guess the easiest way to resolve this is to ask anyone out there with a late March/ early April build GTE - what is the date code on your Holley 4088?

Mike

Can anyone help out with date codes?

I know you said you are looking for a Holley 4088, which I do not have but I do have a Holley 4788 that is sitting in my garage collecting spiders and dust for the last 20 years. My friend replaced the carb on his Pantera and didn’t have a use for the carb and gave it to me back then.

Ok, so any time before car production. I know they made 70X (Oct 67), 7AX (Nov 67), and 83X (Mar 68). The only others I have seen are the 962 (June 69) service replacements that appear quite regularly on ebay.

I think the 834 carbs are too close to my car’s production date. Fourth week of March 1968 was 21-25 March, only two weeks before my cars build date of April 8, 1968. I think two weeks is too close.

Any views on whether two weeks is too close to build date?

In my opinion no, items such as carbs were not massed produced like waterpumps, as long as it’s before the build date, I say you’re good.

iirc, you don’t have the original block? So you can’t just pull an assembly date off of it.
I’m not sure how far in advance the engines were assembled for the GTE’s prior to installation in the vehicle on the build date.

I thought you had the tag for the original carb. Doesn’t that have the carb date on it?

At the time GT-E’s were being made in Dearborn Michigan. I think most if not all Holley carburetors were being made in Pennsylvania. Would it have been possible to make a carburetor during the third week of March and get it to Dearborn in time to be used on the assembly line?

Um…no?

Although the carb was replaced, the tag was saved. The tag is dated 7L8 ( Nov 8, 1967). I have now seen some carbs of late March 68 build cars and I am sure that mine should have either a 705 dated carb or a 7A2 dated carb. This would mathc the original carb tag.
