Thanks in advance.
I bought the front chrome bumper guards to put on, and they are not lining up properly. They are tight at the top of the guard, rubbing on the valance. I can put one bolt on, then other is about an inch away from mounting.
I feel I could just push the valance back and mount it using force, but I want that to be my last option.
So, the question, is my valance just bent and I need to bend it back? Or is there a different valance that is required to use bumper guards? (Assuming not all cars came with bumper guards?)
All valances are the same unless you have an XR7 G and still the bumper guards fit the same. No difference between having or not having bumper guards. Check the mounting bracket on the bumper guard as that might be bent.
Is this on the car pictured in your post? If so, your front bumper looks to be tweaked upward which could be causing the problem. You need to borrow Don Rush’s bumper bender stick thingy.
Thanks all! Yes, that is my car, and I do see what you are talking about with the bumper. I will look at that tonight.
Do you have a pic of the bottom of the guard, where ir attaches to the bottom of the car?
I bought the book from WCCC, and it looks like I am assembling it correctly. I took off the valance yesterday and test ran fitting the guard by itself, still didnt seem right. Nothing is bent as far as the brackets go that I can tell.
Just had the entire front end off, cleaned painted and reassembled, so unless i’ve lost my mechanical ability when it comes to the bumper guard, something is amiss! Lol
All your help, advice and time are greatly appreciated
You have a combination of all three parts being slightly bent. Here is what the bottom arm of your front bumper guards should look like. If you put a floor jack on the bottom of your card it would slip right into place, it should ride higher up on the bumper.
Thanks Don! I hope the bottom of my guards aren’t bent…I just got them new last week! LOL
I’m about to head home and climb under it. If it doesnt fit this time, I will upload pics. I’m sure with all the knowledge here, we will get it figured out!
Don, you were correct. I looked at my bumper guards, and looked at your pic. Even though mine are new, the top bracket mount on the guard was at say a 45 degree angle from the top, whereas yours looks like a 90 degree angle. I just bent it down until it looked like yours, and fits like a charm! I thought it would have come in the correct shape and was afraid to go bending it, not knowing if I was installing them correctly or not. Either way, that’s what I get for ordering them from “those other guys!”
Thanks all, I appreciate it! Now…onto that crooked bumper…
There are no repro Cougar bumper guards and Mustang will not fit. Whereas we do sell Mustang parts to CJ Pony Parts, this is not one of them. They only buy repro parts from us. Usually when a part fits both Mustang and Cougar retailers are pretty good about listing applications.
I am actually kind of surprised they fit as well as they do, it looks like they could be tweaked to pass. Please give us a pic if you can make them fit “OK enough” and I will list them on our site as a part that will fit with mods. Paying the core charge and show chrome is not in everyone’s budget.
BigCat, you are right, and it is the Mustang ones I bought. I sill post a pic sometime today.
Don, since I didnt have any originals, I would have been out the core charge as well. I figured I didnt want to spend $200 for the guards, core and shipping, only to find I didnt like them, so I went with the $40 version or whatever they were, and thought if the quality was trash, but I liked them, I could always upgrade to the better ones you guys have.
