Do drive shafts go bad?

I have a base model 302/C4. Just had the trans rebuilt and the tailshaft bushing was in bad condition and causing a leak. The car has 130K miles. Dont know if it had been done before. Yoke is in good condition. The driveshaft does have a dent about the size of a quarter and depth of about 1/8 inch. U-joints are in very good condition.

I was told by the mechanic that does some work for me that the drvieshaft is a 2 piece and that the rubber inside is probably dried and cracked, which led to the vibrations at 30-50MPH I was experiencing and that this led to the failure of the bushing.

Do these driveshafts go bad?

If you have access to a drive line shop they should be able to check it for balance. Yes many drive shafts have materials in them that aid in reducing harmonic vibrations.

Typically the drive shaft needs to be balanced.
