1967 Cougar base
how do the door belts (glass sweeps) attached to the inside edge of the door. Is there a staple and if so is there a tool needed etc? I understand the door panels get removed.
any advise appreciated.

The ones in front have to be installed with the glass removed. They are attached only with a screw at the very top. They slide in the channel and are trapped by it. With the glass removed I poke them forward with a big / wide blade scraper, then install the screw.
On my '67 XR7 they were stapled in place. With with door panels removed the staples were visible on the underside. By carefully bending the staples back, I was able to release them. They are very tough, and were misshapen when removed. I reshaped them, and used them again.
I think you are talking about the fuzzies attached to the door panels, not the window channel.
