My question Is about clear vs tinted. Would a car with A/C have tinted from the factory? OR is tint vs clear independent of A/C, and an unassociated option.
I need to replace the drivers door glass and want to do it right. I know the glass on both sides have beem replaced, and the drivers door was done wrong (bad glue in). So, should an A/C car be tinted ?
Typically, A/C cars got tinted glass, but I recall seeing at least one without it. You could also have tinted glass without A/C. I think you should just choose whether you’re going with tinted glass or not and then make sure they all match. Since you have A/C, I would definitely go with tinted though.
My '69 XR7 Conv has tinted glass all around with A/C also. Anybody know the numbers for clear vs tinted? Kevin Marti’s book doesn’t show that option.
They are independent options. Tint glass was encouraged as an option with a/c but was not mandated. As stated a Marti report will call out both options if so equipped. If you only show one than most likely you only had the one option. Over a third of the 1970 BOSS Eliminators had tinted glass but none of them had a/c.
There was also a tinted windshield with non tinted side glass.
A Marti report will tell you how the car came when new. Tinted Glass would have been mandated by an AC option but could have been deleted by the dealer on a special order so a Marti is the only way to know for sure. Tinted glass is very necessary in the south but perhaps you can get away without it if you live north of say Kansas City.
You should check all 5 pieces of side and rear glass. They should all match. Factory tinted glass has “SUN-X” etched in the glass. It all needs to match or will stick out like a sore thumb.
My 1968 was sideswiped on the passenger side such that a lot of stuff was replaced. Everything is good, deep, factory tint and stampings except for the passenger door window, which is tinted but in a non-matching shade.
My tinted glass is called out separately in documentation.
“You should check all 5 pieces of side and rear glass. They should all match. Factory tinted glass has “SUN-X” etched in the glass. It all needs to match or will stick out like a sore thumb.”
Thank you, I did go around to all the windows, they are Sun-X except for the windshield.
Pretty sure it was replaced somewhere in it’s 261,000 miles…
Right now im in the research stage. Im thinking i can pull the window. And reposition the rear guide to the correct position
If i cant get the guide off or break the window, THEN i will need glass etc…hence the questions.
I don’t know the general answer, but my '70 XR7 has factory A/C, and clear windows. My Marti report doesn’t show any “delete” option, so I don’t think A/C meant automatic tinted windows, at least in '70.
I used confusing terms - the tinted windows would automatically be triggered by an AC option but the dealer could get around it by placing a special order and not specifying the tinted windows. If you have the Marti Report, what is the “Order Type”?
In other words the dealer could delete the need for tinted windows with an AC order. Your Marti Report will only show the options that were paid for.
Hmm, I mis-spoke, as the Marti report says it does have tinted glass, but it’s very, very clear, so if it was tinted, it was incredibly light. Of course, the Marti report also says it was delivered with a 2bbl 351 Cleveland, but it most definitely has a 351 Windsor.
