My 68 xr7, like the rest of the car, has been through a rough life. I’m in the door replacing the regulator and I want to finally fix the door lock. I know this has been touched on elsewhere.
When I pull up and hold the door lock and. depress the door handle on the outside of the drivers side door, the door opens. But the door lock flops right back down when I let it go. Which keeps the door locked.
What’s wrong with my mechanism that the door lock won’t stay up in the unlocked position? I looked in the door and in the service manual but can’t find a remedy for my particular issue. I took a pick inside the door:
There are three springs in each door latch. The springs often rust out causing the issue you describe. You can either make springs from new ones at the hardware store or replace the latch.
My drivers door lock is hard to open. It feels like the rod is bowing in the door but it still works with a bit of effort. I don’t really want to pop off the door card for fear of it getting ruined. Any idea
Success! I removed it. I can see 2 of the 3 springs which appear to be ‘springy’ enough.
There’s a third, by my thumb that looks like it should be a part of the lock/unlock mechanism, sandwiched between 2 plates, that appears to not be doing anything. Is it serviceable?
Specifically, the small circular spring… i can’t tell how it is supposed to be attached… if I could get a photo or illustration then I could probably fudge a hardware store fix.
