Good Morning all,
Do any of you have a good way to repair the peeling chrome mylar trim on the door panels or some sort of replacement? Mine are in pretty bad shape and I don’t see any options out there for replacement.
Thanks

Your not alone! Nice door panels seam to the toughest part to find for any classic cougar?
Has anyone tried using this stuff or bought anything from this company? I know it’s not a perfect match, rounded instead of ridges but the size seems pretty close (.360 wide x .180 thick). Can you get the old mylar off without destroying the door panel?
Haven’t tried that stuff.
Yes, you can get the chrome tape off without destroying the door panel. Patience and time and an X-acto knife worked for me. IIRC, there is a clear layer over top of the chrome. I didn’t replace it on my car, just deleted it.
I have this same conundrum. You can’t get the actual plastic trim off, it’s heat-fused to the door panel. I tried unsuccessfully to remove the “cat” emblem from a junk panel and it was completely fused to the underlying layers as well as the vinyl, and took everything with it.
As for the mylar “chrome” you can remove the old stuff from the plastic, it will peel off. I experimented a bit with some shiny mylar tape to redo the “chrome” and it looked quite good. You can also easily “draw in” the black pinstripes over the tape with a paint pen or similar, since those areas are recessed. The only problem is that you’ll end up with seams around the corners since you have to use multiple pieces of tape. Also some of the edges wanted to peel up, maybe it would help to use an adhesion promoter or something.
Maybe it would be possible to get a large piece of reflective “chrome” vinyl (the type they use for wrapping entire cars), slap it over the door panel, heat it up to coax it around the contours of the trim, and trim away the excess with an x-acto blade. At least then it would all be one seamless piece. Then paint the pinstripes over the vinyl.
Wonder how effective silver-leaf would be…??
I’ve used a silver leaf pen from the hobby store for little stuff like that before. A small brush and some chrome spray paint sprayed into the cap of the can works too.
“Chrome” spray paint never looks reflective like chrome, just sayin. All the ones I’ve ever seen / tried just look silver.
