I went looking on WCCC to replace the trim end pieces for my interior door pulls and it looks like the straps I have are not original. Anyone know what these are off of?
You used to be able to get something like that from your friendly neighborhood auto parts store. I think they were commonly used as replacements or addition to GM cars and trucks.
Ah thanks. Well that’s pretty lame, would you happen to know what the fastener spacing is on the original straps? Hopefully when I replace them they cover up the holes from these ones.
The holes that the mounting bolts(screws) go through are about 9 3/8 inches center to center. the alignment holes are 1 1/8 inch farther out.
Note, I used a 1969 XR-7 panel, the door pulls are the same for 69 and 70.
Getting a good picture that shows that I have the tape measure centered on the forward hole is hard with the phone.
Close up of the measurement
This is a correct door pull and one of the 2 sets of end caps.
Bottom side of the end cap.
Also if I recall the 1969 door pulls were riveted to the door card(Panel) and the 70s have the bolt/screw to hold them on. Of course I could have that backwards for the years on this.
Please get rid of that ugly one as soon as you can. It served a purpose but if you can’t find a correct one I’ll send you this cracked one.
I like the 70 Ginger XR-7 interior. Here is mine.
My 1969 XR-7 ( San Jose assembly ) has white door pull straps, and they were screwed through the interior door panel into the door inner metal skin.
The long screw has a blunt end on it, and was therefore not a self-tapping style. The chromed bezel and the screw were held together by a tinnerman-style / push-nut on the back side of the bezel. The screw could then spin freely in the bezel and be tightened through the pointed tang end of the pull strap ( which inserts into a slot in the bezel )
The pull strap and chromed bezel were then positioned on the door panel ( the lugs on the ends of the bezels match pre-embossed holes in the vinyl ); the screw is tightened down, and the brushed chrome cover is then installed.
Originally the metals covers had a small strip of 3M double sided adhesive to keep them in place.
Awesome, thanks for the detailed reply. I like the ginger interior as well and most of it has been redone which is nice. My concern is whoever put these ones in punched holes and/or damaged the leather that won’t be covered up going back to the original pulls, will have to see, but I agree these ones are fugly. Where would be the best place to find original pulls that won’t cost a fortune?
My 70 has them riveted on as well, and the rivets move fore and aft in the door panel holes as you pull the handle.
You have that backwards Neal. The 69s are screwed on and the 70s are riveted on.
