Door Speakers 73 XR7 Convertible

Hey everyone,

I wanted to install some speakers in the door of my 73 XR7 convertible which did not come with them. Three questions:

1.) Are there any markings on the inside of the door panel that show me where to cut out for the grilles? I have a set of the factory grilles.
2.) Are the cutouts already in the door metal for the speakers and what size do I use?
3.) Did the speaker grilles come color keyed to the interior color or where they originally black only?

Any other info that would be helpful is appreciated.

Didn’t see this 'til after dark tonight; will try to get you a picture or two in the daylight (tomorrow) that may help. The grille on my left door is in pieces so it’s not hard to get a picture of the metal door and the (aftermarket) speakers which look like 6x9’s to my tired eyes. I doubt that I can help you on what the back of the inner door panel looks like; my look like they were water-logged sometime in the car’s life.

I can tell you that the speaker panels came “sort of” color-keyed to the Ginger interior in mine. The intact one on the passenger door isn’t that good of a match, but it may just be sun-faded; will pull the broken one out of the glovebox to see how close the back of that panel comes to the color of the rest of the interior.

I’m struggling to find any pictures just now, if I do, I’ll post them up.

i fitted speakers in the doors of my '71 when I gave it a freshen up.
At the front of the door, kinda under the window winder, there was a cut out which could be pushed out to allow speakers to be fitted.

I found it a strange size tho and I couldn’t buy speakers in the UK to fit the hole, so I just got as close as I could.

The pre-cut hole in the door wasn’t big enough for 6x9’s, but if you don’t mind cutting the metal, it’d be pretty easy to expand it. Just check on the depth of your speakers so they don’t foul the window.

If in doubt, whip the door panel off and have a look.
If I find the pictures I’ll post up later, I lost lots of pictures in a computer crash, but I have them on a memory stick somewhere

EDITED
I haven’t found my pictures yet, but borrowing Chuck’s pic, you can see the location I refer to and the size of the speakers.
IIRC it’s 7" x 5" or something. An odd size

Thanks guys…I am also contemplating using the kick panels with the cutout areas in them. I picked up a set, but am concerned that they might interfere with my e-brake. Does anyone have experience with them?

Nice looking vert ! I’m glad you posted as I am thinking of freshening up my audio in the near future. My speaker grills are black, as is the interior so can’t help you there. Are you adding speakers to the back? I was thinking of adding an FM/CD player to mine but not going the whole route of high end audio with subwoofer and such. :smoke:

Can’t think of any way to install rear speakers without hacking everything up. Will stick with fronts only for now.

I’m just installing an amp and running an iPod cable. The radio is factory AM and I don’t want to install an aftermarket head unit.
