1973 351C 2v with a Carter 2100 2 bbl. carb. The car is a survivor and runs great, gets 17 mpg on regular gas. Therefore, I want to leave the existing carb and intake manifold.
I’ve removed the 1973 smog items including disabling the EGR by disconnecting the vacuum line. This keeps the pintel in a closed position. The exhaust gases are routed through the intake manifold to the EGR via a channel under the carb (see photo). Does anyone make a metal plate or asbestos gasket that can go under the 2 barrel carb in place of the EGR? I imagine it would have to be heat resistant and a tight fit to keep the exhaust fumes from leaking under the hood.
Thanks for the replies. Tapping for an NPT plug would be an effective way to stop the flow of exhaust gas. However, I also want to entirely eliminate the EGR assembly sitting under the carburetor. I would prefer a billet plate with a heat resistant gasket. I don’t have a milling machine and was hoping that some manufacturer makes something.
The pre-EGR is ported for the PCV hose. WCCC has a used one available and it’s cast aluminum. I’m thinking of mounting it upside down and running my PCV to it. That should block the entry of exhaust gases and still allow the engine to vent. What do you think? THX
I’ve heard that the Carter/Autolite 2 bbl has the same pattern as Holley. I’m going to try Trans Adapt 2137. On Amazon, a user says it fit on his Ford samll block. https://www.hedman.com/part-search/?PartNumber=2137
I’ll let the Forum know if it works.
I sometimes feel that the 1973 is the Rodney Dangerfield of classic Cougars.
The Trans Adapt 2137 works perfectly on a 1973 351C with a 2 bbl. carburetor. The EGR was corroded and full of soot. I tapped the exhaust inlet in the intake manifold and installed a steel blocking plug. I found a 12 mm tap to work perfect in the existing hole. Clean and vaccum the crud because it isn’t very deep to fit the tap. The plate came with longer studs that will be necessary. They fit perfect and are just the right length to not interfere with any hose or linkage. I recommend using original style gaskets in place of the supplied ones because the original lower is heat resistant and the carb to plate gasket blocks essential passages as Ford intended.
This car is no Eliminator but at least I’ve got it to perform like a 1971 pre-smog.
