Ok I’m on the tail end of a complete restoration on a 68 Xr7. It’s down to getting all the lights to work. My dash lights coming on but I’ve got no power to anything but wipers and ignition. I’m at a loss. I’ve got the schematics and wondered if the main supply is dead just wondering if anyone had any ideas. ??
Dash lamp power comes from headlight switch.
Wiper has power coming from fused ACC, signifying that the ignition switch is providing ACC power.
What specifically doesn’t work? That will help identify what circuitry is not powering up.
Check for 12V on the fuse clips. Even if the fuses are good, the clips are often loose or corroded.
Often the fuse box is so corroded that the fuses do not make contact. I would start there measuring voltage on each side of every fuse. Often I have to polish each contact with a Dremel and a tiny wire wheel to make the fuse panel work.
Hi Royce. I did clean all the fuses. And also the wipers were working without any fuses oddly. I’m not getting any power to the headlights, tail lights or park lights. It’s not even trying. Wondering about this sequential relay. It’s an early model replacement to original. And untested. Thinking a good night’s rest will help
Thank you for your reply Midlife I’ll probably be giving you a call.
The windshield wipers have a circuit breaker located in the headlamp switch so it’s not surprising those work. I would use a meter to figure out where the problem is.
That’s not true on Mustang headlight switches and I suspect Cougars as well. I agree that something is wrong with headlights, though, as other headlight related systems aren’t working. Wipers normally get their power from an orange/white wire that is ACC non-fused, then distributed to other lines in the wiper system. The washer motor gets its power from a fused ACC line.
All of this sounds like a bad ignition switch or bad ground at the battery/starter solenoid system.
Not seeing any fuse associated with the windshield washers - are you sure?
In any case I would not guess it’s this or that component - I would use a meter and / or a test lamp then see what it actually is. No guessing needed.
Yup, you’re right: 67/68 is the only year Mustang/Cougars whose washer pump does not have a fused input line. My bad.

Are you sure that you did not mean to say that the wipers have a circuit breaker in the wiper switch? That is what it says in my shop manual.

All good advise here as usual.
I restored my ‘67 in 2020 and had corroded connections at the fuse box. Soldered on all new pig tails. Like others said check power both in and out of the fuse.
Make sure it’s truely no power by using negative on tester to a known good ground
See pic. ‘68 should be the same?
