Eliminator Downunder

On the other hand my Cougar really couldn’t be looking any worse!
Pulling the dash out was a lot of fun, at least the rat family had already moved out of the heater box :open_mouth:
Ive stripped the engine bay and interior out of it now, so I guess the only way from here is up
The next step will be off to get it blasted and primered before tackling the body repairs, rust, new floor etc.

Love those wheels … Apparently there was a yellow G there as well

Any pics mate?

I found a couple of the “street find” Eliminator. Lucky spotto but Id be dusting it off for a drive!

That is cool!

Its been a while (nearly 5 yrs) but ive got the GT project finished and driven a couple of hundred miles so far.
There’s still a few teething issues with the carby, dizzy but at least its drivable
With this one done the Cougar is next so wll probably start in the new year by getting it sand blasted and take it form there…

Uh…I hate to be one of those guys that picks apart someone elses work, but your steering wheel is on the wrong side. :poke:

Looks great. Enjoy driving it, 5 years is a long wait.

Dang - XA GT - the best one they made. Very nice

Nicely done! is this the same year and model as what was used in the Mad Max movie?

Man, that is cool! Would love to pull up to cruise night in that and watch all the double-takes!

Thanks guys, Im looking forward to the motor running in and things starting to loosen up a bit.
Its satisfying to finally get to drive it after just looking at it in the garage and working on it so much!
The XA pre-ceded the XB “Mad Max” coupe which was more around 1974-75.
Im excited about the Eliminator too, but its a mammoth task to bring that baby back, i hope i can pull it off.

That’s a nice XA GT, and yellow too! My favorite color  I don’t think I’ve seen one of those before.

There are several in the Seattle area and hey used to come out for Cascade Cougar Club’s Prowl show in July

Lately Ive taken the original block out and stripped it down. The pistons, crank, cam etc were all siezed after 30 years or so and it took some ‘gentle’ persuasion and about 3 cans of WD40 to remove them!
The D block looks like it was cast Dec 69 which suits the Jan 70 Build date and I noticed it has the rear drain holes which I havnt seen in later model clevo engines. Im hoping the block is still usable so will get it cleaned up and checked to see what the bores are like and what needs doing.

Woo! Crusty! Hope it all cleans up good.

Happy New Year!

Here are some pics of the original damaged qtr on the passenger side. The skill used in repairing the old damage leaves a lot to be desired and just consisted of drilling as many holes as possible to make the bondo (bog) stick to it!
What is dissapointing is no one seemed to make any effort to beat it out from the inside properly prefering to make the car look like it was the victim of a ‘drive by’
Anyway, Im open to suggestions on the best way to repair this, atm Im thinking another qtr would be the best option? I definately wont be just blasting it and filling it with bondo again.

typical US cheap repair. We have seen it on most of the ones we’ve worked on lately

Uh huh. Driver side door on my 67 looks like that. Someone went to town with a Tommie gun. I plan on banging it out, and using a lower temp weld to fill in the holes grind them smooth and the glaze over the top. A lot of work, but saves a few hundred bucks.
I’ve done the same kind of repairs on aircraft when they actually had bullet holes. Done right, you would never know it was done.

Thanks for the advice and I agree as I already have 1 qtr off the car I dont really need another!
I might consider it but only if I can find a good doner 70 model.
Im thinking of getting a mig and some panel beating tools and giving it a go myself from the inside.
It is accessable so Id like to try and get most of it out, weld up the holes and use as little filler if possible.

If you already have the donor '69 quarter for that side, maybe you could cut / patch using the '69 skin? Not sure how close they are (69 vs 70) skin wise.

Just a thought. Probably about as much work as just filling each of the holes?
