Happy Groundhog Day! Sun was shinning today so I tooled around with the top down at lunchtime. Summer is coming…
Here is an updated list of '69 and '70 Cougar Eliminators that I’ve found listed for sale on various sites. Most are combed from popular sites (CraigsList, eBay, Hemmings, CarsOnLine). Of course if you know of an Eliminator for sale please feel free to add it to the list. Or if you have any info / details or other general comments about an Eliminator listed here (or elsewhere) please feel free to pass along that info.
Below you will find links to the older “Eliminator Market” threads so that folks can find sales history easier ~ especially for cars that have been listed off and on. Also, just because a car is not in the current Market thread does not mean that it is no longer available.
I’ve also been saving almost all of the sale history, pics, etc for the cars listed. Not sure if this sort of thing gets saved by Dave (Eliminator Registrar) and added to the Eliminator Registry database or not.
'69 Eliminator Drag Car still available / on the market again. Appears to be the same pics as last time (almost a year ago, IIRC), so probably the same owner.
I believe this was discussed in a past thread. I tried to figure out what color it might have been ~ looks like maybe orange in the door jam pic, but the trunk lip and door data tag pic show black. Looks like alot of welding was done on this one, and I believe the concensus last time it was listed is that it would take alot of work to restore. But I bet it would make a fun driver
Is there some documentation not shown in the ad that verifies this car as an Eliminator? Obviously, its highly modified, but there’s no front spoiler or rear spoiler, the grill isn’t from an Eliminator and neither are the door panels. The hood scoop would have been included with the 428 ram-air option, so that’s not an indicator. I can’t make out the trim tag well enough to tell if it had an Eliminator interior or build date consistent with Eliminator production.
Even a standard Cougar with a ram-air 428 is a special car, but how do we know its more than that?
Good question. I was just answering a similar point made by OnePunch on MC.net, LOL! Y’know, I think the last time this car was listed the owner had posted a Marti report, or possibly someone else brought it up.
Apparently I didn’t save the past listing in my Eliminator files. This leads me to wonder if that is because it is “merely” an R-code car and not an Eliminator.
Best bet would be to contact the owner if there is any real interest, of course. I do recall the old MC.net thread discussed the price of the car vs. the cost of undoing the various drag mods, plus general restoration.
…I think I will send the owner a request for Eliminator confirmation. Just to clarify for everyone. I’ll update if any info arrives.
Mike, sorry to jump in here late but I met this guy at one of the final car shows last year. He came in late and asked me if I knew of anywhere to find wiring harnesses, seats and an interior to a 70 Cougar. I suggested a few of the vendors that we use and this site and then he showed me a picture of the car. Said he was trying to make it street legal. I remember wondering about the integrity of the engine and how the final product would be presented. He did not mention that he had been trying to sell it at that time. I’m about 4 hours from Jackson so I could not just hop over there on an afternoon… “ROAD TRIP”!

I did send the seller a message asking if he had a Marti report or build sheet to confirm it was a factory Eliminator. I also told him I mentioned his car here on CCC.com and on MC.net, in case he was interested in discussing his car with other enthusiasts.
His reply: “Mike I don’t have Marti or build sheet I bought the car as is in 2002 the window and door plates match the fender.”
I told him thanks for the info and let it go at that.
OnePunch, over on MC.net figured out the color code is probably T (red), and the interior code was either red or ivy gold. So those two things would lead me to believe it is probably not an Eliminator, unless it was a special order. But if it were special order paint, wouldn’t it have the 5-digit paint code instead of the regular “T” code?
Special paint was not available on a '69 Eliminator, only 1970. Kevin Marti’s “COUGAR…by the Numbers (1967-1973)” allows you to figure out the paint/int color combinations for the 2,250 Eliminators and there were only the 4 published colors.
From the ad: "I am selling my 1970 mercury cougar eliminator project car. I have removed about 90% of the rust and primered the car black. I got the entire car(except engine and transmission.) the car comes as is with all the parts i have took off. I have almost all the original parts that came on the car stored i.e: both doors, front fenders, hood, grill, interior, all glass is there except windshield. It is also on jack stands in the front so will need a craddle and flat bed to move.
I do not have the title for the car. If you have any questions reply to this email with your phone number and I will get in contact. I open to offers on the car."
Update on this one: seller sent me a copy of the Marti (shows Eliminator option) and some basic pics of the car. Console, 3:25 open gears, AM radio, decore group, tinted glass are the other options. Pics dont’ show a horrible car, but it does need alot of work. It is also currently sporting a vinyl roof. Not sure if it was a dealer addon or a previous owner, but we all know it “shouldn’t” be there.
