So after sitting in the garage for over ten years I finally have time to get my 69 eliminator on the road. I’ve been trying to get everything ready for inspection and have noticed that the emergency flashers stopped working. Could the flasher relay cause this? All other signal light work correctly. Any help would be appreciated.
Replace the flasher can behind the radio and that should solve your problem. Unfortunately, it’s almost impossible to do without removing the dash or at least the radio.
Thank for the quick reply, I just dropped by the parts store and got one. Seems strange to me that the blinkers work and replacing the flasher will fix the emergency flashers. I thought they both ran off the same flasher so if the turn singles work then the emergency flashers should too. Well when I get home I will replace it and we will see. For 4 bucks I can’t really go wrong anyway.
thanks again and nice 70 you have there.
Well, that didn’t do the trick. All the signal flashers work fine, just the emergency flashers won’t work. And if you have the turn signal on and push in the emergency flasher the signal stops working. Any other ideas?
Thanks
They dont use the same flasher can. The turn signals run off the flasher can in the fuse panel, the flashers run flasher can behind the radio. Most cars use the same flasher can, but the sequentials dont need to sequence for the hazards, so it uses a seperate can.
Yep, I found that out as I looked further. I switched both sides and it didn’t matter, either way no emergency lights.

Verify that 12V power is present at the flasher. No power indicates a bad circuit breaker or bad wire. The most likely failure point is where the white/red splices into the brake switch feed circuit. Note: If the brake lights work, the circuit breaker is ok.

Then check for 12V power on the white/red wire feeding the turn signal switch at both sides of the turn signal switch connector. If no power is present, the connector pins of the turn signal switch may be fried. Inspect the pins on either side of the connector to see if they are black and oxidized. This requires using an extraction tool to push the pin out the back side of the connector shell.
If power is present on the white/red wire, the switch has probably failed in the emergency button section. This is not typically repairable and requires a new switch.
First I want to think everyone that took the time to post some ideas to help me with this. second I know most of you would not let your classic cougar sit for about 10 years but two babies and a 100 year old house your priorities change quick. Now that the kids are bigger I have a chance to work on my toy and that’s how I find my self in this mess. I want to post this to help out the next guy, I was able to fix it but it is crazy. I wound up taking the steering wheel off and I jumped from the brass rivets on the emergency flasher switch and it would work. put the wheel back on and it worked with the switch, started the car, no work!! so off comes the wheel, jump the rivets and it works, start the car, no work. so today I jumped from the rivets and no work!!! so I jumped from where the wires are crimped and it worked, then I got the idea and wiggled the blue and white wire and low and behold it wiggles under the brass rivet!!! so I got a nail punch and tapped lightly and TADA, the flasher switch works like it should.
Thanks again everyone, I hope to be back out on the road soon! I can’t wait!
