Engine decals 351c 2v 1971 XR7 vert

Hi all,
Can anyone tell me what decal is supposed to be on the drivers side valve cover at the front? There was one there at one point in time and I can’t find a picture that has on in that location.
I really appreciate your help.
Second question, Is it better to leave the original decals, even if they are a little worn? Or is it better to replace them?
Thanks
Jennifer

That would be the engine code decal. I would send you a picture of mine but it’s hidden behind the air conditioning compressor. Here’s a link with some examples:

Also, the engine code would be on the “Engine Tag”. Jennifer, I clicked on your picture to enlarge it and it looks like there might be an “Engine Tag” underneath of the coil. Here’s a link to a pic of an engine tag, the engine code is on the lower right corner of the tag http://www.martiauto.com/itemselection.cfm?item=TAGE-64&selecteditems=yes. If it turns out that is the engine tag under the coil, post the info on the tag and someone will decode it for you. John

Thank you so much for the info! Any help I can get! I’m a complete novice. This car was my Father’s car from 1977 to last summer, over the years it was a driver and there are lots of weird little things that I have questions about. I grew up in a car family and as a kid participated in old car clubs, but this is my first classic car.
I will take a pic of the engine tag and post in a little while. I looked at WCCC and there does not seem to be one for a 351 c 2v I found one in the mustang catalog but is says it is for a 73, would it be the same?

I looked at NPD and you are right, no 351C-2V in 71 decal shown. I’m thinking the '70 2V decal “K600AG” (D-285) might be correct for your engine/car rather than the '73?

Thank you for the sticker info. “K600AG”
Here is a pic of the engine tag, I hope you can read it. You are right, it was under the coil. if I need to get a better shot of it I can take the coil off.
I really appreciate all your input! The more the better!
Jennifer

This sticker (or what is left of it) is on the radiator shroud. Everything I have been able to find out about the sticker puts it in lots of other places from the valve cover to the air cleaner. In the NPD book I’m thinking it is the service specs decal (D-43) but in the NPD book they have it on the LH shock tower.
So is it in the right place for my car? How do I find out? I have the tag book but it also is not specific.
Jennifer

I’m no 71 expert but on 351C engines, I’ve always seen that sticker on the outboard front side of the drivers valve cover. There is a flat spot there that is perfect for the sticker.

Hey Jen, here’s a shot of the decal on the drivers side valve cover on my 73. Not sure if its correct but that’s what is there. I don’t have the decal you show on the radiator shroud or either shock tower and nothing under the coil. Sorry its all I found :smoke:

And here’s a pic of the sticker on my 70 351C 4V. So now you have a pic of a 70 and a 73 and I don’t know if either is correct for a 71.

Geesh Jeff, if I had know you were gonna step back back and show that clean engine compartment I would have cleaned up a bit :poke: Jen, on the passenger side valve cover, front facing the radiator I have a decal similar to the one on the WCCC site :smoke:

351 2V W / Air Engine Code Decal - Repro
Fits: 1973 Mercury Cougar / 1973 Ford Mustang

I do have a sticker that looks like that in the same place. On the fender side of the LH valve cover, so what is the label on the radiator?
I’m very impressed on how clean your engine is! Jeff, I noticed you have a decal on the snorkel of the aircleaner, I had a clean spot on mine but no Idea what went there. can you post another pic of it so I can see what it looks like?
I appreciate the help.
Jennifer

Well, it’s not quite that clean anymore. This was taken during the build a few years ago. The sticker is much harder to see now that the engine compartment is full.

Here’s a closer view of the emissions control sticker. Again, I don’t know if this is the same as a 1971. Mine is also a California car so I don’t know if that makes a difference too.

Thanks Jeff, that actually helps a lot. Went to a car show this weekend and got some really good info and found out that The CCOA has judging criteria that I think will be a great resource for finding out how things are supposed to be. Every little bit helps.
Had a great time at the show, It was at the Summit Point raceway and we all got a chance to do some parade laps on the track. I have never been in a parade that went that fast or burned that much rubber! It was a blast! It was great to meet some fellow Cougar Lovers from the Delmarva Cougar Club!

Here is a pic from the Parade laps at the car show

Het Jen, that yellow cougar looks a little sideways, you weren’t bump drafting in the corners were you  Are you going for a concourse restoration on your vert? :smoke:

LOL, We were sitting still waiting to take our parade laps. But the parade laps were a hoot.
As to your question, not sure I want to go that far, but I want to preserve what is there and make it right. It is mostly original but was a daily driver for many of the years My Father had her. I’m finding that a lot of the screws and fasteners have been replaced and I’m not sure what should be there. He was the kind of guy that when a screw came out he replaced it with whatever was handy. As I do work I want it to at least be correct.
Do you ever go to the Carlisle Ford Nationals? I’m planning on attending this year for the first time, Not really sure what to expect and I’m feeling like I bit off a little too much.
Jennifer

I’ve never been to Carlisle, not that I wouldn’t want to just the timing has never worked out. As to your restore I feel your pain, seems like every time I start a fix I run into something else that needs attention and the quest to replace repair with something original or correct kicks me back a few days or so. Just part of owning one of these great cars and trying to do a proper job, all makes sense when you pull out of the driveway and head off down the road :smoke:

Jen,

A number of members from both here and MC.net will be at Carlisle.

Regards,

Bob
