Exhaust hangar restoration

Has anyone rebuilt their exhaust hangars? The rubber on mine look poor…which is to be expected after 50+ years. From my understanding, the rubber came from tire sidewalls. In talking with someone at WCCC, they suggested conveyor belt material, but didn’t have suggestions on rivets/size.

I wasn’t looking for necessarily a concours level restoration if the price was going to be crazy, but something that looked fairly OE. The tool seems to be the most expensive thing for limited use. Maybe I can sell it and excess rivets after I refurb mine this spring.

After searching the net, found the http://www.southsandia.com/forum/website/rivets.html that may be close enough for the rivets.

Rubber: Purchased this as it was same thickness…maybe a bit shinier than expected, but should work.

Rivets: 1/4" diameter x 3/4" length x 1/2" head in truss head style.

Cool! Let us all know how your project comes along. Would be interesting to see how it works out!

That’s an interesting project. I have thought about doing something similar and will be interested to see how it goes. I would definitely be up for buying the used tool and extra rivets/rubber from you to do mine.

Will keep you in mind after I’ve done mine this spring. The rubber came by the foot x 6” wide…I bought two feet, so I should have left over.

Im hoping the rivets are the correct size.
