Factory Exhaust

Good Morning Everyone,

Does anyone have a good reliable resource for replacing an exhaust system with a factory style original including all of the proper hangers and pieces? I’ve looked at various vendors and of course the pictures and descriptions don’t always reflect what you will receive. Also, did the 69 xr-7 come with a 2" or 2 1/4" system?

Thanks

I might get crucified for posting this link, but I bought this:

The part numbers I used are in the video description.

Here is the final result. My car originally had the transverse single exhaust, but I upgraded to the true dual for the future engine.

I was looking at the same system for my 67 A code C4 as it would be as close to stock if Ford had made duals available. Do the hangers attach to the car with out modifying the car, using factory mounting holes? In the video it looks like the mufflers hang quiet low or is that an optical illusion? BTW I called MU and the guy I spoke with could not tell me anything useful other than it would fit.

If the car had come with duals, and not the single exit, transverse exhaust, I am fairly sure it would have been a direct bolt in. I had to drill the holes for the rear hangers just in front of the rear axle. I get home in a week, and I will try to remember to get under the car and take a picture of those. As for the mufflers, I’m sure I could tuck them up closer under the car using the bends in the pipes and how they are clocked in relation to one another. I was more worried about letting heat not build up on the floor boards than tons of ground clearance. If those mufflers touch the ground, the car is either high centered or something has gone horribly wrong.

i’ll join you at the cross. I also bought a kit from Mustangs Unlimited. Ther hanger kit was dead on to the original pieces. I also bought a new H-pipe from them The fit was perfect. I especially like the look of the turn downs on the tailpipe. I bought a kit with flowmasters. The mufflers came with brackets that bolted to the hangers.

I bought the dual exaust hanger kit for my '69 convertible and it fit perfectly. The holes were already there for everything even though mine originally came with single exaust. I just had to chase the threads that were already there.
The Borla mufflers I bought did not have any kind of hole/nut on them to work with the original muffler hangers so I had to fab up some nut enclosures and spot weld them to the mufflers, but that was kinda fun for me.
I did degrease the hangers and paint them with Eastwood Spray Grey rattle can. They came out awesome!
After I bend up my exaust and hang the mufflers, I will provide better pics.

Excuse the dust under the Cougar, I have been doing a lot of bodywork and sanding on her and it gets EVERYWHERE!

Hello All,

Well, I’m still trying to find the correct exhaust system for my baby. I believe that Mustangs Unlimited (I hope I’m not in trouble for mentioning a vendor name) has the best supply for this. My question is however, was a 2" or 2 1/4" used. The hanger kits that MU have are showing the 2 1/4" muffler brackets showing the mounting bracket (to the car) turning to the right and left appropiately. The 2" muffler brackets are shown hanging straight down from the car. This is a 69 xr-7 convertible so I don’t know if that makes a difference or not.

Thanks,

I am not sure what the factory original size dual exaust pipe was, but I am using 2 1/2 for my '69 XR7 Convertible.
I would be willing to bet the original was 2 1/4.
I bought the 2 1/4 from MU and will just swap out the clamps to 2 1/2 clamps.

Does anyone sell the tabs that contain screw holes in them that are welded onto the back side of the muffler so that an original style exhaust hanger can attach to the muffler?

Currently my exhaust hanger is set up like this which is then screwed into an original style exhaust hanger. Should I just keep this style of clamp and just sandblast and paint the rusty exhaust hanger?

If duals were an option on a 67 A code it would most likely had 3 mufflers like the the 67 390’s had. http://www.mustangsunlimited.com/itemdy01.asp?T1=TEK5+01&Category=Exhaust&subCategory=Dual+Exhaust+Kits&CatKey=Cougar To do so costs an arm and a leg though compared to a 68 system. Looking at H pipes there seems to be two non HiPo pipes. An unknown brand and a walker for almost twice the money.

As far as I can tell, 302s and 351Ws came with 2" Big blocks got 2-1/4" So did 351Cs in '70-up

Of course you can’t buy a true factory exhaust since it was a one-piece welded assembly. The MU kits use the shorter Mustnag tailpipes and don’t go far enough back to reach the bottom edge of our Cougar’s rear valence panels, but I suppose you could cut the MU turndowns off and use generic 12-18" turndowns, the clamp for which would be about the right location for your dual tailpipe hangers anyway…

We just received a shipment of those tabs. I still need to create the listing and I will post a link. Give me a day or two.

As far as I know the tail pipes never went back to the bottom edge of the valance panel from the factory, 67 and 68 at least. My 67 A code has Ford replacement parts dated 72 if I remember correctly. The tail pipe ends way before the valence. There is no tail pipe hanger on the OE single exhaust because the hangers are on the transverse muffler and the tail pipe is short. If the tail pipe were longer aka to the valence it would need one I would guess. It would be nice to see some pictures of true OE exhaust on these old cats to what is what.

Sweet; thank you for the reply Scott. I’ll keep my eyes out later this week. I was going to order a couple other items this week as well so this is good timing.

Cheers.

Steve,

Not trying to hi-jak thread but, What are your thoughts on turbo mufflers vs flowmastrers on the MU kits? Sound,Drone.ect.

I’ve got 3 chamber flowmasters on my 1970 cougar 351W and they got a deep sound to them and I would consider them noisey (this is from 7 years of memory tho as that was the last time it ran). At an idle they sound deep with a bit of mean and not too too loud but once you’re out on the freeway they can get quite loud. I’m young and like loud so I went this route. Haven’t experienced the turbo mufflers and haven’t really heard much about them.

Steve,
