Facts, Opinions, and Fakes

I think the foundation is that the majority of us have met each other at various events over the years and developed friendships and respect for one another. I got this a lot at the Dearborn 50th from observers. “The Cougar community treats each other like family”. I’ll stick to the paint and mechanical Bill and leave the electrical to you

I feel compelled to comment since Scott made me famous.

This is by far the best forum I belong or have belonged to. The information is always abundant and accurate for the most part. Even when something incorrect gets posted it seems that a correction is never far behind. I don’t see a need for someone to undertake the Herculean task of trying to make corrections. Part of being one of the concours crowd should make you aware that you still need to do your due diligence. Information does get updated and none of the experts know everything. Except maybe Jeff Speegle, he might know everything.

I do like the FAQ idea. And I’m glad to hear Bill confirm that the search function is not as straight forward as it may seem. I have a tendency to be search challenged. Maybe you can get Don to do a video showing us how to use it effectively.

Speaking of community, I think Don Rush deserves credit for:

his yearly get-together/cruise, which promotes community,
his website accurately and fairly rates the quality of reproduction stuff/crap. No one else does that that I know of. In fact, I know of no other major parts vendor who participates as much as Don (another Don of Ohio Mustang Supply comes close) in forum discussions
His videos are top notch, and usually amusing as well.

All of that adds credence and comradery to the community.

Speaking of Don, hope you’re feeling better and take it easy for a while!! Sounds like you had a crazy 2020!

I too think a FAQ of some sort could be helpful, at least for the really common questions that may always come up. Turn signal Diag, wheel fitments, cougar to mustang differences concourse specifics etc. could even have subjects for modifications like electric fans, efi, electrical etc. all in one place easy to find

It could be enough just to have a sticky in each category that is more or less a collection of threads with the most information. I know there are some already so maybe just a refresher.

As far as the main site I remember exploring that greatly when I first stumbled on the site. It could be good to expand in that further for those that do not care for forums much and would rather read an article vs a thread. Again that would take someone putting in the hours.

Probably more random thoughts then helpful ones…I do know the search can be difficult to locate exactly what your looking for. I know I’ve fumbled around for a while trying to get to a thread I know existed but had to weed through a bunch of threads to get there.

On the other hand it’s sometimes nice too see a repeat question or topic because in most cases is sparks another discussion that can bring a new idea or fresh set of eyes in it that’s helpful to more then just the originator.

Seems like a lot of these threads where they ask a question, get lots of advice but we never know the conclusion. I think a function where in a couple months could automatically send an email to the person posting the question of what was their solution and outcome and add it to the end of the post.

Speaking only as a guest here. Repetitive questions, over and over, on the same subject can be a challenge. They fill up the pages and the search results, making finding what your looking even more of a challenge.

The idea of making individual lists of FAQs by year, main subject or other focus needs, should IMHO to be considered but thought through carefully, since changing later just adds to the work.

Creating non-traditional FAQs where you don’t list the common question followed by in a written response, but instead provide a link to a thread on the subject, would/might be easier and quicker to do and will hopefully drive follow up questions to that main thread, building and adding to that specific knowledge base.

Merging threads on the same subject in another option, but is not a complete answer IMHO though it can help. The non-traditional style of FAQ’s would take on the look and design to our (over on CMF) Running Changes Main Threads, which are organized by year and plant, since our focus is so narrow. Nothing is perfect but I’ve found that the majority of members will adjust to most choices in order to get the information they need and desire. This is often proven by the number of comments every forum gets initially when changes to a forum (format, new program…) and everyone laments on how much better they liked the “old” one better

As a side note - I appreciate the prior comment by Al but I’m far from knowing everything thing or most things. Wife reminds me all the time  Do have a decent memory, amount of experiences and library/resource for some details

Way to go J, I think you have a good grasp on a lot of information, I have been a fan of yours over on the 428 and FE forum , keep us informed whenever you can.

I do remember! and i also remember you registered for the main site, and it took a long time to realize you needed to register separately :wall: for the forum where you kept trying your login wondering why it didn’t work :unamused:

Johnboy, I noticed the BC personalized plate on the 68 in the picture that is part of your signature. Is that where your cat lived before going East to Quebec?

Being rather new as an owner having never had a Cougar prior the research of these cars I’m finding can get a little daunting at times. There have been times a week or more was spent in trying to determine the appropriate color of a component when there is little to no evidence, but a coat of rust. I can find out what every square inch of a concourse 1970 Challenger R/T is supposed to look like online at the drop of a hat. For the Cougar, this is a bit more trying and even then the veracity of that information is of question. Often times you take a part off, clean it a little, some of the finish comes through beneath the grime and you’re like ‘cool. That’s decided’. Over a period as familiarity grows I think it becomes easier to discern what is correct and what isn’t.

Should have been around before the internet. Cost and time of multiple phone calls to survey those than might know. Sure the Mopar world has its issues with too much out information out there that is not correct that just gets copied from one car to another as owners assume that the pretty cars they see have been researched and built correctly.

At least your not trying to restore a Pacer or a Marlin

Welcome to the family

Thank you J, this is a great community and I am looking forward in playing a role in the preservation of these cars. During this initial phase a lot is gained in both knowledge and experience of which may be of benefit to others in their own venture. And I’m learning quite a bit here as well as from other sources.

I cannot imagine the scale of the effort it would take to go back and edit prior posts. I cannot support that … (you owe me, Bill).

Sure, maybe the search function can be improved, and maybe we can better “categorize” questions (either historically, or going forward). But even if a query is successful, the journey does not end there. My view is that we all have an obligation to question opinions – because the presence of 50-55 year-old, “undisputed”, “cold-hard facts” is fleeting.

Part of the joy of owning a 68 is asking and listening to folks and then, making my own informed judgements. I will always prefer to defend – and accept – my own decisions (in life and in Cougars) rather than to rely solely on the instructions or views I’ve been given by others. This forum gives me much of that with incredibly convenient, generally positive and almost always comprehensive information.
